Default "SPECS" cameras....anyone been caught?

I just wondered, since, when I am trundling along at my steady 40mph, 50mph or whatever, through the endless roadworks, I am often passed by cars doing WELL over the proscribed limit, only to see them brake heavily at the camera, then accelerate away again.

DO they get done? Or are specs cameras a myth?

I know two friends done for 58 mph in a 50 zone on A127.
As we all know, they are average speed cameras and work off number plates, so there are two ways to speed without being caught already.
Not to mention driving pissed, undertaking etc etc.
Not a bad deal really.

If they use the same cut-off limit as for Gatsos, meaning anything up to 6 mph above posted limit won't get you a ticket, and you factor in the 3 or 4 mph inaccuracy of the average speedo, logically you can be doing nearly 60 through a 50 zone and not get done.

I'm not aware personally of anyone caught although there is a massive thread on P/Heads where a lot of people acknowledge getting a ticket. I just set cruise control to +10% of speed limit until I'm out the other end. I also swap lanes however they have closed that loophole apparently

TX.

No, it's not actually - it's pretty useless on UK roads due to the congestion, unless it's adaptive cruise control - which IS fantastic.

Not that I speed but I too switch lanes... would be good to find out about the hole.

I`ve regurarly been tootling along at 50mph (sat nav speed, not speedo) and had people pass me at quite a few mph faster

And switching lanes doesn`t work anymore. The older type were `lane specific`, the newer ones cover all lanes

I just follow a Uk registered truck.

Calibrated tachograph vs my uncalibrated speedometer. Usually means I can follow a HGV at an indicated 55ish mph..whilst no doubt their tacho says a tad above 50mph in the cab.

What does worry me is the HADECS systems used on the new variable speed limit roads (not M25). I've been guilty on a couple of occasions of misreading a 50mph lit sign for 60mph...due to the prior one being 60mph. Not had anything through the post though.

Don't know anyone that's been done by cameras in roadworks, but the stepson & two other people at work have received points for doing low 60s through the permanent 50mph set on the M60 near Stockport.

Being front facing, SPECS cameras don't bother me, as there is currently no requirement for bikes to have a number plate on the front

90% of temp specs are not wired up. Take a look at the base of the tower where it is bolted to a slab of concrete. There is a 3 inch gap where the wiring is visible (or not).

Feel free to wizz through them at warp 10+

When you see people slow down(slam brakes on) at each camera, that's what they are doing - looking for the wires

My lad's Clio 197 has cruise control, and also a different type that he can set so he can do any spedd UP TO a preset limit.

Now that would be a bonus in UK SPECS equipped roadworks.

I wish the Scoob had either........the normal cruise control would be great going down France.

Do the newer cars have it and can it be fitted to a classic?

They have the Hard Shoulder Running on the M6 thru the Midlands - variable speed limits showing 50 or 60 or whatever - routinely go through these at 20mph+ over posted limit - EVERY DAY for last 18months - no sign of a ticket yet - never ever seen one flash either... and I do about a 30 mile strecth each way every day.

All mind control for the proletariat I reckon.

Dr Hu, have you ever thought that the speed restriction might be in place for a reason, other than for you to gloat about how you've never been caught?

Whenever i see somebody fly through variable speed zones, i just think one thing. Utter tw@t.

They have got them in the tunnel between Plymouth and the road to Cornwall.

I was accidentally doing 40 once, it is a bit dark in there and did not see the speedo. Never heard anything thank goodness.

I'm sure cruise control was an extra cost option back in the 90's...

Autos only though, as were the majority of cruise-control systems of that era.

Apparently the cameras can't "talk" to one another. If you pass a camera on the inside then you can speed along as long as you move to the outside lane before the next camera & vice versa. Next time you're in a specs zone just watch the hgv's change lane & come past in excess of 50 mph then change lane again before the next set of cameras.

You go and give that a go at 70mph and come back and tell us the result.
It's already been said above that changing lanes does nothing with the latest cameras.
I'm yet to see a lorry change lanes in a Specs zone unless it was being held up by a slower moving vehicle.

You can fit after market cruise control to any car, i used to fit it to mazda's quite a lot a few years ago, just make sure it's a good quality system, any decent car accessory dealers should be able to do it.

Dave, seriously, you can't really use cruise control in the UK like you can, for example, in the US - where roads are MUCH clearer.

I drive thousands of miles a year up and down the country (M4, M5, M6, M1, etc.) and you simply CANNOT use cruise control for MOST of the journey MOST of the time. Trying to use the stalk or buttons to speed up and slow down would result in an accident in many cases - and using the prescribed controls ('the brake' and 'the throttle') for doing so is significantly easier and more responsive.

I accept that if you drive from Cornwall to Liverpool at 3am on a Sunday morning then you may find that you can use it for a large amount of the journey - but doing so during the working week from 8am to 7pm etc. would be impossible.

All of my cars have cruise control - though only one (a Lexus) has Adapative Cruise Control (radar cruise) and that IS useful. I've used the others on trips to Scotland once waaaay north of Liverpool or in the middle of the night, but certainly not in any sort of traffic.

...and no, I don't live in the SE - whatever you may think of it.

DN
