Default William Tutte and Tommy Flowers

I have just watched a BBC documentary about these two amazing men ; Between them they were responsible for breaking the German codes during WW2.
As a result of their efforts ,it has been speculated that WW2 ended 2 years earlier than it otherwise would have.
Given 10 million lives were lost each year of this great war , it could be said these men saved 20 million lives - Both Allies and Germans.
Some of their work is still subject to the official secrets act.
Neither Tutte or Flowers ( Designer/builder of Colossus the first computer) were ever recognised for their contributions to the war effort.
Although Tutte was made a Fellow of the Royal Society .
It is worth researching these two men .

I saw it too, great programme and something i knew nothing about, never really heard of them before. Heard of Colossus and Bletchley Pk. and Turing but not about them breaking the more advanced codes. It was fascinating and enlightening

It is part of a series (pretty sure there are 4 of them) BBC 2 is currently running, will be watching the others. Should be part of school history curriculum!

Operation Jericho also worth a watch

If you're even slightly geeky, then visit the National Computer Museum you'll also get into Bletchley too which is just as excellent.

they were - Turing didn't get much of a mention - they concentrated on the less well known members of the team.

One sad fact was that Tony Sale responsibile for the Colossus rebuild project died recently

Excellent programme.
Brilliant minds (among others) from humble backgrounds who made a huge difference to the war effort.

Flowers was a GPO engineer, he basically did everything off his own back, he is one guy you should look into, really amazing what he achieved.

No, although I thought the same. Tutte and Flowers, with Flowers being the engineer who made it work. What really surprised me was that they were both used at GCHQ until the nineteen sixties!

sorry Les i thought it was Google but it is in fact Facebook. same sort of thing though. $72 million a year in just electricity costs. that's some bill just to store a load of photographs.

Thats incredible Big S.

I was able to watch the Bletchley recoding last night. Really fascinating. Mrs Leslie used to be a top code breaker once. Explains why she always seems to be a step ahead of me!
