Which binoculars ?

Which binoculars ?
My dad wants some for his birthday, for looking at "birds" and **** ..
He likes looking out across the sea and other random old man type things, but ideally wants them to be small enough to carry.
We have set a budge of £100, as well lets face it, he's gonna use them maybe twice ..
Anyone suggest any? eBay has loads but how do I pick ?

Watch out for the Lidl 'specials'. They have binoculars on the shelf about twice a year for c. £15. Got some myself and they're absolutely brilliant. Especially for what you Dad wants.
BAK4 lenses; apparently they're good .... They're 10x50 but a 'normal' size so don't know how that would affect the 'small enough to carry' requirement. And I don't know when they're in again - you'll have to keep a look-out.

Good selection on Amazon for under £100 and some good makes like Olympus and Pentax. Avoid small thin plastic type ones. Not sure how good cheap zoom ones are really. I've had a go on some Leica ones and the clarity is incredible, but then again they cost between £800 and £1000!

I used to have some ex Russian night sight binoculars which were almost as clear as day as long as there was some starlight or moonlight for them to amplify.
I flogged them to some bloke who wanted them to watch courting couples at night!!!
