Mopeds
What would I have to do to be able to legally ride a 50cc moped?
Just a friend I know is giving his away, and I quite fancy it to get to work on....will save me using my car everyday (and save a lot of fuel).
I've never really thought about what I would need, so don't have a clue.
Obviously insurance: Who to try?
CBT: Guess I would need to go for one? Where do you find out where to do one?
MOT & Tax: Same as a car? Can I go to my local/friend garage for MOT's etc?
Cheers

This is off DVLA website:
If you have a car driving licence
If you passed your car driving test on or after 1 February 2001, you must complete a CBT course to confirm your full moped rights.
If you passed your car driving test before 1 February 2001 you don't need to complete a CBT course to ride a moped. However, the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) recommends that you do.
If you need a CBT it's not that difficult to find a local Motorcycle training school through google or Yellow pages etc.
Not sure about your other questions.

as above, u would need a cbt depending on when u passed your driving test
defo tax, although its only about £20 a year, think you need mot and can take it to any bike garage do be done, not sure about car garages
i did mine in 00/01 but only drove it for about 9/10 months until i passed my car test

If you haven't ridden before it might be worthwhile doing a cbt anyway. Also some decent riding gear.insurance try likes of carol Nash ,Bennetts etc but always requote every year. And get your self a Tyre plug Kit for the puncture that always happen at the wrong time. Lastly be safe out there, let the idiots go, invariably you pass them at the next set of lights.

50cc - OK if you're not gonna get above 30mph, but with 100+mpg will be cheap on fuel! MOT stations for bikes will test it and tax I thought was £15 per year unless it's gone up! CBT will take you about 4 hours and cost around £100.

Tyre repair kits that I mentioned http://www.infinitymotorcycles.com/p...-repair-kit/79 bought a spare set to keep in the car as well.
Still running a repair plug in my 125 scoot for a year now , no problems.

Sounds like you missed the mid 70`s super moped heyday. Set of "L" plates, a quid for a provisional license and you could hop on a Gilera, Yamaha or Fantic. Even a Fantic chopper moped

Don’t ride in the gutter, otherwise some drivers will be tempted to squeezes you even further in to the side of the road when meeting oncoming traffic, rather than waiting for a safe overtaking opportunity. Ride in the middle of your half of the road so they can't even attempt this.
IMO of course.

Insurance try rampdale.
Tax circa £25 (thats what we paid this year for my daughters 60 plate one)
CBT as said local bike school, very simple test andit tests your competency more than anything.

Thanks for all the help guys
Unfortunately I went round tonight, and he got rid of it to someone else Think I might look for one still though, as I would save a fortune in fuel.

If you have never ridden before its def well worth doing the CBT. As others have said, you need tax, ins,MOT same as a car.
Get a good lid and at least decent jacket and gloves, most only do 30 however it still smarts if you happen to come off and the kind nurses use a wire brush type thing to remove grit and crud from your fresh gratered arm/leg/butt cheek!!
My 50 used to do about 50/60 as it was de-restricted.Will still save you loads in fuel though.
