Every job I do.........

Every job I do.........
...........always feks me over.
Yesterday, it was the fitting of a sub. It's a nice, compact unit, made by Alpine.
So..........decided it would fit just under the passenger seat, but sticking out slightly into the rear passenger side footwell, secured by Velcro. Everything OK so far.
Now this particular sub has a remote control box, which I decided to house in the armrest.
Still no probs.
I ran all the wires, and all went OK, despite the wires being overlong, but I was loathe to cut them, so ran them and bundled each with a zip tie. Until I got to the remote cable. It has a telephone type jack. I poked it under the seat, only to find it came out, somehow, between the seat side and the back All that space and somehow it went into a tiny opening
Tried to push/pull it back and it stuck firmly, the jack being wedged BEHIND some part of the seat mech, right up under the seat squab
Ended up having to remove the seat to disentangle it
Anyway, get it all wired, try it and...........nothing. The headunit is as dead as a dodo.
So........remove sub fuse to isolate it, check all fuses, the car one and the one on the rear of the radio: no probs.
I have a spare headunit, so try that: just the same.
After half an hour of messing, I found that the LIVE connector was still inside it's plastic housing, but not making contact It looked good, but wasn't. HOW many times have I given advice to people on here about checking, not just looking?
Pushed it in and away we went. I've now suitably tightened the connector: it won't come out again in a hurry
So, all in all, it's done and it works.
But it took me at LEAST two hours longer than it ought to have done.
One day, I'll do a job and NOTHING will go wrong

Story of my life, I've learnt to never say to the missus that something will just take a couple of minutes to do now, it's the kiss of death for any job

Share your pain....
Everytime I go out to service or repar my bike it always takes ages longer than planned normally due to a seized something or another or the wrong feckin part supplied
You'd think I'd learn with age

I was just thinking this exact same thing the other day. Happens to us all.
On wednesday I plucked up the courage to change the Cam cover gasket on my e46 330ci. It involves disconnecting a small oil breather pipe at the top of the cover. Gave it a soft tug and nothing, put a bit more strength into it and it came off and snapped . Rang the local dealer up and found its in stock and only £18, bargain I thought. Sent my brother off to collect it while I finished off the cam cover seal.
When he got back I got to replacing this pipe I broke. Took me another 2 hours to get to the lower end of the pipe to release it and replace with new one. I was going through the denial process, where you know how many components you will now need to dismantle to get your hand in there but still try and avoid it .
If I take just the air filter housing out, will I get to it? Ouch, crap I've cut my hand again.
If I disconnect and move this cable out the way that should be enough.... and so on
A 2 hour job took about 5 hours and I got soaked cos as always it had to rain half way through the task.

Jack up car
unbolt wheel
remove wheel
unscrew caliper
remove caliper and pads
remove disc screw
remove disk
replace disk & screw
clean caliper and piston
replace caliper / pads
replace wheel
remove jack
Book time 1.2 hrs... to do both sides
How long did it take me...
6 sodding hours just to get one wheel off and the disc back on and the caliper ready
Ferking wheel was welded to the disk..
And the same again on the other side!!!!

For Les: a sub is a sub-woofer, produces the bass that most car systems lack, due to them using small speakers in tiny weird shaped enclosures.
You only need one, since apparently the human ear cannot tell where bass sounds come from like they can for those in the higher registers.
Same as computer speakers: I have two tiny ones, the sub is hidden out of sight, produces quite a good sound
