"Fairy lights" on new cars? Love 'em or hate 'em?
The rage for putting a row of white LEDS on new cars, and some older models
What does it do for you, if anything? Personally I loathe them and find them a distraction, especially around dusk.
Just come back from 3 months in France, and was constantly annoyed by the Dutch cars with headlights on all day. EVERY one I saw got me wondering............

Initially when I first saw them on some high end Audi's etc. I thought they were cool, now I couldn't care, too common and most of the cars with them on are driven by w*nkers (i.e. sat 1ft from my bumper at *70mph* in the outside lane of the motorway while I'm overtaking a lorry, **** off!)

Usually it just announces a **** rocket in a diesel A5
Its like those "Angel Eyes" on new BMW's, looked pretty good for a week until every tired old E36 dragging its sorry carcass round got retro fitted with them.

It's not about looking cool, but is an efffective way of providing daytime running lights. When these were first mooted, some years ago, the cost of pemanently powering conventional bulbs on every vehicle would far outweigh the benefit in reduced accidents. Now energy efficient LEDs have tipped the balance the other way, so, as above, they will be a legal requirement soon. I think they generally look OK and will prevent muppets from driving around at dusk with no illumination.

my volvo's lights are permanently on dip. looks a bit odd when the sun is streaming, but overall i like being seen.
i have no idea why but when i descend on people a bit rapidly on the motorway, they tend to get out the way and quite often slow down too. not sure if it's lights, volvo badge or the large chequered paint job
actually, the people slowing down thing when i pass IS puzzling.

Some are too bright and detract from being able to see the indicators.
Same issue with LED brake lamps used in the same cluster as the indicators (Range Rovers and Enviro 300 and Enviro 400 buses for example...I can barely see them!
However after owning several silver cars, in dull grey Britain, some form of lighting is needed in the daytime bacause people just simply don't see me. But LEDs housed in the same cluster as the indicators is a big nono. Same as indicators in the headlamp cluster as it just makes them next to useless (and don't start me on amoebabrained bikers who fit miniture indicators in lieu of the originals...do they want to be knocked off?).

I don't honestly think that DRLs will make any difference to people seeing cars. If a person can't see my car when I am flashing my full beams at them and beeping the horn as they decide to try and take the front off my car without even bothering to indicate, what use is DRL's going to be?

They do help in some case. But it really does depend on the colour of the car.
My Escort (blue) and Monaro (red) I never had an issue, nor our psychedelic green Astravan, then I jumped in my mum's silver Nissan and I was cut-up left right and centre, then I bought a silver Subaru and had the exact same problem, actually it was worse, as I would typically be driving faster in a car with fitted with worse brakes! (such is the nature of the classic Impreza's brakes ).
People just don't see silver cars. Or can't judge their speed.
So maybe DRLs should only be enabled on silver/grey cars?

I've thought about this for quite a while now.
They look absolutely **** and any one who has them would find it really sensible to drive off a cliff.
FFS what's gone wrong with the world

From the other side of things, there are concerns for motorcyclists with the introduction of DLR.
Since it means motorcycles are no longer the only vehicles displaying headlights during the day, some are of the opinion that
they wont be so easily discernible against other road users.
