It's come to a point where my mum feels she eats to sell my dads northern soul record collection.
We know that his collection is worth 1000's, but we just don't know how to go about it. I have joined a forum today in the hopes of getting some help, but I was wondering if anyone had and experience with selling rare items?

We have no idea what is worth what, as he knew all that. So I was imagining an auction house might be the best?
I'm hoping to source some help on the site I have found, but the minute I let on I know nothing about the records, I will get fleeced!

Any ideas?

eBay is about the best place! If you sell them as a complete lot then you're not going to get the most for your collection.

Go on discogs and list the lot. I buy from there and it has an extensive database of all music media.

Oh, and avoid people offering to buy the lot from you (as above), they will know what they are worth and will offer you about 50%.

I'm not going to be able to do eBay as I can't list them all seperately.

It's all vinyl, and it's worth a mint there are 1000's of records, some of which are worth upwards of £300 alone. That's just going by my dad picking up a bargain on a Sunday carboot, and showing me in one of his books, but I will be damned if I know which ones are super expensive and which ones are just £40-£50 worth.

My mum has already had people say they will come and have a look, give her a price etc but I have told her not to bother as they will just offer her a stupid price.

If I had the room, I would keep it all!

Ok, go on discogs, make yourself a profile, then start searching the database to see which ones are rare. Alternatively, buy the Record Collector Rare Record price Guide 2012, the outlay would be worth it.

One of my cousins was quite famous on the northern soul scene Dave Taylor, went just about everywhere and knows the music like the back of his hand, which i imagine is much like your dad, i'm not able to contact him at the moment but when i'm back in the uk on the 16th i'll get in touch with him and see what he says and possibly sort out contact details via pm, i'm sure he will be interested and would help you or point you in the right direction at the very least.

Heard Craig Charles (Lister - Red Dwarf) on R2 last Saturday - he was hosting/part of a Northern Soul all-niter - one record he played was worth some 30K so be careful and do you research well

Well worth doing it a bit at a time and checking the values as you go.

It would be a disaster to sell a really valuable one for peanuts.

I'm secretly hoping my mum holds on to them, but then that's not going to do her any good. His office is still full of all his things. His music, his laptop, his Norman wisdom pictures.

That terminator model I bought him from universal studios. My mum hated it, as well as all the other little film memorabilia I used to get him. It's all still on his office Walls.

It makes me smile to see it.

I`ve been into the vinyl scene for about 20 years but mainly the 60`s/70`s rare psych/R & B/Progressive rock

There is a big demand for original issue 45`s depending on the artist, The big money tends to be in the 60`s northern tunes, I know a bit about the UK scene but there are many US collectables outhere too , Some of the early UK Stateside singles and Tamla 500 series, this is refering to the catalouge number (Eg, TML509, TML524 etc.. )

The best way is to have a Northeren specialist have a look and seperate the good stuff from the not so good, Ebay is the way for making the most as i have been buying selling for 12 years on there and the prices some people pay for rare items is staggering,

I have spent over £400 on an LP, So the demand is there for the good stuff, Its just knowing whats good, Its worth checking out the `Rare Record Price Guide` although this only lists UK issues, there is a guide for US issues called Goldmine they do a few versions depending on the genre.

Good luck mate, If you can get a list of any UK issues i can tell you what they are worth depending on condition but i know nowt about the US issues,

Thanks Gaz, I know he has about a scads worth of the uk guides, but I think I will be in over my head.

We are hoping to concentrate on his collection first, rather than everything, as I know all the best ones should be there, not in the garage.

I just don't want to see it all left to warp and end up in the bin.
