Default Private Number Plates

A while back I bought a private number plate for my ST as the mark that came with it ended "GEY".....and that just wasn't happening

I now wish to sell the car and need to either put the plate on retention or transfer it to a new vehicle. However, both processes appear to take up to 6 weeks (granted probably only 14-21 days in reality). During this time it appears I cannot sell the car or I will lose the plate.

Am I missing a trick here or something? People buy and sell cars on a whim all the time and I have a difficult time believing that people are switched on enough to organise their plate transfer/retention many weeks in advance of wishing to put their car up for sale. Surely there is a procedure that is quicker or instant?

I simply want my car up for sale ASAP without losing my plate.

I think if you already have a new car to put private reg on, it can be swapped pretty easily as its transferred from one to the other, putting it on retention is the long way round.

When I worked at a BMW dealer we had to deal with cherished transfers quite a lot but they always seemed to be swapped over very quickly.

You`ll have to put it on retention if you want to sell the car before buying a new one as it`s actually illegal (as I found out). To be honest it doesn`t take very long at all....7 - 10 days in reality.

If you go to the local DVLA office personally, you may well get it done on the spot-I did.

Surely they can't issue you with a new V5 on the spot though? Maybe if I hand over my forms with £10 sticking out

Btw, I note it costs £105 to put a plate on retention for a year (FU DVLA!)....does it cost anything to reapply the plate to a new car at a future time within that year?

Going to put it on retention and wait for the new paperwork to come through.

I note there is a section on the V317 form where you can put down a Grantee and a Nominee. I've put myself down as Grantee giving me sole right to the registration plate. However, if I put my wife down as Nominee does that mean we will have the option to assign the plate to a car in either mine or her name (as registered keepers). If so, that would be useful given that we might buy the next car in her name.

Yes, you'll be the grantee for now, but once the plate has been assigned to her car your wife, originally as a nominee, will become the grantee on a new retention certificate, (should you remove the plate). You will then need to add your name as a nominee for the next time.

Put on retention today....paperwork is usually 5 days according to the lass in the DVLA. Also, by putting wife down as nominee I have the option to reapply the plate to a car registered in either of our names in the future....which is nice.

Cheap 12-month MOT throwaway run around for a while. This is why the plate is going on retention as it cannot be put on a car older than 2002.

Lol, that would be nice....I'd fancy an M3/5 though. Would settle for a VXR8.

You can make a car as old as you like, but not make it appear younger!

Exactly, so I can't put my 02 plate on an 01 car or, as is more likely to be the case, an R-reg banger

Although probably not as fast point to point as an M3, simply for the V8 sound track i'd be taking the VXR8

I had an M3 Evolution after my Scooby and it was a really good car in the build quality and the handling which was excellent. I only changed because we needed a smaller car in this area.

I got the retention documentation through and have now put the car back in its original plates and informed my insurance. However, the new VC5 hasn't come through yet and, according to the DVLA, this can take 4-6 weeks - which is ridiculous for some simple paperwork.

My questions are therefore:

a) Could I technically sell the car without the VC5 in my possession (with the promise that I fill it out with the new owners details and send it back as soon as it arrives)

b) Would anyone actually buy a car in such a scenario (i.e. is this a common request of purchasers? Would you buy a car in such a case?)

Can't think of any reason you couldn't sell the car without (for the sake of a couple of weeks of no V5) it but i wouldn't do it unless i knew the seller personally.

I was in the same situation and part exed my old car. They were happy with just the remaining part of the V5 that had the DVLA stamp on, I sent them the rest when it arrived.
I wouldn't personally buy one like this though, i'd wait for the new docs. I think the new V5 took about ten days to arrive.

I have bought a car with just the new owners slip given to me. Been told the old one was lost etc or its in the post. It can be a huge mistake but I phoned dvla and they said the slip I had was out of date and that I would have to send off for a new logbook at £25.
If you want to sell before, try and be sure that the seller would trust you (in a way) that you would send the V5 back when it came through. The only thing is that the buyer wouldn't get the green slip and they are supposed to fill in their details and sign it and then you send it back
