Paper Driving Licences to become void ...
... in 2014 so I read today.
Well, that's OK as long as it's FREE!!!
I'm not paying to swap .... that wasn't the deal when I signed up - so, they can pay for the change over if that's what they want!
Source:- AutoExpress:-
"The counterpart driving licence is set to be axed. The Department for Transport (DfT) has revealed that the document, issued with the photocard licence, will be scrapped in 2014. And old-style paper licences will be abolished shortly after.
As part of an efficiency programme at the DVLA, driver records will be stored on an online database within three years. This will enable police to quickly check whether a motorist has any points on their licence via the web, without needing to see the counterpart document. Organisations such as employers and insurers will be able to check an individual’s endorsements, too, although only with the consent of the driver.
The DfT has also said it intends to recall paper driving licences shortly after the new system is introduced, calling it a “logical follow-up to abolishing the counterpart”. According to the DVLA, there are still around 12 million paper licences in circulation – so more than a quarter of all motorists have yet to switch to a photocard."

Horse drawn carriages.
Horses.
Dead horses if been flogged.
Asses.
Tree trunks providing they are conveying monolithic stones between welsh wales and proper england.
Any vehicle for the use of conveying the dead due to the plague..
Pray carry on..

Work it out! The current cost of a photo licence is £20....there are still 12 million of us with paper licences...so 12m x £20 = £240million.
Whats the odds the fee rises before 2014.

240 million is a drop in the ocean of debt we are in. IIRC it is free to swap if you change address, I shall be doing so shortly, so I will get the card for free. Still not happy though as there are too may things with my photo on them & held on Govenment databases.

Remember you need to pay to renew it every ten years, AFAIK.

Im more concerned about the notion that the police can check 'whether you have points' - since when? Its none of their business, after all.
A little bit more mission creep..........

Although legally you cannot have the old paper and the new card licence at the same time, my old paper licence was 'lost' when i applied for the new one, when the new one arrived, i 'found' the old one. paranoid about missing classes.

I've still got a "old" style paper one - its funny how it confuses quite a few people when they ask to see it as they dont know what to di with it.
I will be annoyed if this does turn out to be true and I have to have a photo style one.

Had to change years ago due to a change of address and subsequently had to renew the photo when it expired after ten years to the tune of £20. Therefore think yourself lucky you have your free licence until 2014.....
However this begs two questions:-
1. Your licence (paper or photo) expires when you are 70 (which you claim to be older than) and at that stage you'll have to switch to a photo card licence when you renew.
2. It's currently free for those over 70 anyway.
So clearly you have been lying about your age, we all knew this anyway! How old are you really?

What he said. Accessing that info from a database could influence the decision whether to give you points or not. Like in court, previous convictions should not be taken into consideration during the trial.

Pontificating
But you were happy to pay all the stealth taxes Tony and Gordon brought in during their tenure, which weren't part of the deal when you voted them in so jog on son and cough up.

Previous convictions and previous points SHOULD be taken into account ... as if you have not adjusted your behaviour then you need a double hit second time around.

you have to renew the photocard every ten years anyway. so if they go away from paper copy it will cylce out by 2024 anyway. perhaps thats the way it should be done.
