Default Watch help!

I have a 2 - 2.5k budget for a watch and was thing of this tag. I am no expert at all on watches. Is this a decent watch or are there better watches in my price range? All opinions and facts welcome. Are Tag's all they are cracked up to be?

personally don't care much for TAG's... dunno why, just don't really like them....

But the watch in the pic you supplied is a dead ringer copy for an Omega Speedmaster......

Why dont you buy the real thing?

Don't buy a TAG.

In 14 years I've had no problems with mine. That said, Mrs SJ's TAG went off for a service to TAG and came back royally screwed up; diamonds looking like they had been stuck back on with mastick and worse - condensation on the inside of the face.

We sent it back suggesting they put right their wrongs and they have quoted us over £800 to fix their ineptitude.

We've said no, just return the watch.

I'll post some pics when we get it back as it was a lovely ladies watch.

Thanks for the comments. I assume Omega's are better made than Tag's?

Has anyone bought a watch from the watch source as the Omega's on there seem cheaper yjan the hight street?

I wouldn't go for this watch as I too was interested in this Tag. Once I had trawled through the watch forums I found out that the crown snaps off on this particular model with alarming regularity. I went for this one instead...outstanding watch!

Just out of interest Jura watches have some good deals going on, so worth seeing if they have anything you might like.

I have a TAG and it has been great.

about the limit for mere mortals. i spunked £2500 on my breitling super avenger 5 years ago. they are £4200 to buy now. however, take a look at some of the patek or the grand complications if you really want to see a watch price. now they are expensive.

i had a old Omega Seamaster. never missed a beat. make sure you compare like for like. i would opt for the automatic before the quartz versions. make sure you pick the right one. do your homework before you part with your hard earned. to many fakes with no papers floating about.

have you thought about some of the smaller IWCs, (spitfires, aquatimers et al)

I quite like this and I looking for one in black to compare. Do you think I could get it for £2100 if I haggle or is it not the done thing?

Yeah, thumbs up for SwissWatchesDirect from me also. I got my Seamaster from them and they delivered it to my Royal Navy warship whilst I was on deployment in the middle of the Persian Gulf. It was delivered on a Gash Barge. Outstanding service and I got my VAT back as it was delivered to a BFPO address.

I have a Tag, nice watch, but not that accurate.

I also have a Breitling. One point to note is how much the price has shot up. My Tag was £950, now £1450 and the Breitling £1200, now £1750.

Both watches i went into Goldsmiths, found which one i liked, went home, sat down with a beer, logged onto the Goldsmith website and rang round. Dont ask if they do discounts, they will say no. What i did was ask if they will deliver to my local store, can i pay CC, then i said how much i want to pay. Some said no, some offered very small discounts, but one rang me back an hour later and offered me 20% off.

I wont purchase off the grey market.

See my previous post. Ring round an authorised dealer ie Goldsmith. All the numbers are on the net. £2350 new, i reckon an hours work could get you it for £2100.

I once sneaked a look at a wholesale price list in goldsmiths. Yours will be £1200, marked up to £2,350.
They have to pay Vat though.

For your budget, I'd recommend an Oris. Nice watches. I have a Pro-Diver myself. Was £1670 a couple years ago.

Not keep on Tags myself.

I've noticed the price rise too. Have a Breitling Navitimer world. RRP was £2995 when I bought is 5 years ago (with 18% off) and notice the other month that they are now going for nearer £5k. Add another £800 if you want the steel bracelet (Black leather on mine)

Goldsmiths are a rip off. Notice their prices are higher than local competitors, and offer 0% discounts. Even when I pulled out my Credit card to buy my Oris, the guy wouldn't budge.

Bought from Market Cross Jewelers (where I got my Breitling from) and got 20% off within minutes.

No, they quote the retail price as all authorised dealers have to. Yes they give discounts, but you have to push for it, or ring round. I wont buy from the grey market. I dropped my Tag on a wooden floor, it stopped, but Goldsmiths fixed it for free.

Yes, great isn't it. It means if you ever sell it, and you have the box and papers (which unless you are an idiot you will have safely stashed away) plus its in good condition, you will get a good price.

Thats the same as mine, 7 bids and £900. I paid 1k for mine and its still perfect.

Stilover - That's why I was thinking of Market Cross as I get 15% off with my loyalty card I got after buying our wedding rings. Saves all the haggling as the 2 Omegas I like are £2690 in most retail shops and a few hundred less for the other I like.

When you say these watches cost more now are they identical or are they a newer revised model?

I am still looking at the Tag as I find it really nice looking but everyone seems to say Omega. Anyone give a benefit of a Tag over the Omega.

The missus has seen me looking at watches and now wants a bottom of the range Cartier for £2.2k. What have I done lol.

Think there is some sort of rule that all the shops have to retail them at the same price if authorised dealers.

Though i might have made that up in my head

Identical.

I also have one of their cards. But push for 20% off, or settle somewhere inbetween. 15% should be your starting point.

Correct. My thinking is if i'm going to spend 1k on a watch, i'd rather get the real deal, not a grey import, or a watch with last years mechanism, or a return etc. I want a brand new, genuine original with full box and papers. I've heard of grey Rolex watches not having genuine mechanisms, or part thereof.

I fancy both of these though

http://www.watchtraders.co.uk/Mens/F..._Gold/497.html

http://www.thepurists.com/brandjpg/un/gk02/index.html

The second at 450,000 euros seems like a bargain to me.

I've always liked the breitling's but the ones in my price range have been a bit small. As I was looking in the window the shutters came down on a lovely Breitling and all I saw was a lovely big face, metal strap and loads of tiny numbers and writing on the face (I think it said mph). I saw the price began with a 2 thousand and something and it said discontinued 40% off. Anyone know what it may be so I can see if it is a bargain. Any reason why I shouldn't buy a discontinued watch?

If its new, then 40% off is a huge discount. No reason at all not to buy a discontinued model, after all most models undergo changes periodically.
