Thumbs down Delaminating music CDs.

Been transferring my CD collection to MP3 for listening in the car. Several CDs give very poor quality mp3 files, and some will not even play on the computer drive.

A close inspection shows them to be 'misty', I presume the layers are separating and corrosion is setting in. The disks have been well stored and cared for.

I remember when optical disks were first introduced that on Tomorrow's World they spread marmalade on a disc, gave it a light scratching and demonstrated how it still worked and that CDs were virtually indestructible

Anyone else experienced this? Do you think I can make a claim against the retailer, as when I bought them I expected them to last forever

We all thought they would last forever!!!

A few of my early discs have got 'rust' forming on the inside and have gone a pale rusty orange colour.

Never heard of any delaminating though.

Maybe the act of spreading jam on them made sure they lasted forever?

I think CD's and DVD are of lower quality than they were probably when they came out and were probably very hard wearing originally. I suspect they have been cheapened allot over time as people have been hooked into using them.

That and my Jonathan King compilation CD are very hard to come by.

Why should I pay again for the same thing?

Just wait for apple to finish their cloud guff, it will be able to tell what you've got ripped, and if they are on the cloud already you wont have to upload your rips. You should then be able to get a "better" version back down from them.

All "in theory" of course.

Failing that, email the record label?
