Unhappy

Hello chaps,

Now i'm NOT a technical person when it comes to this sort ov stuff and if i describe my symptoms like a bag ov spanners, bear with me

OK I have a MY00 with the standard head unit. When I bought the car (New) the dealer said that he would throw in a boot mounted 10stack CD player. I thought OK cos i wasn't expecting it and it didn't cost me anything.

It is mounted under the parcel shelf.

I got a call from the dealer who informed me that unfortunatley, the Changer would render the RDS inoperable was that ok. I thought fair enough, I never took any notice of my vectra's traffic master so why worry about not having my CD's interupted by local radio stations. They fitted it.

Over the past few weeks, I have been driving around, enjoying the sound of the engine (Int it great? ) and having recently put a decent backbox (JPI) on, have found that the need to listen to CD's has been minimal.

Last weekend though, I was listening to a cd and I noticed the most god awful "Fizzing" underlying the high frequencies. I listen to heavy rock music i.e Machine Head, Metallica, Limp Bizkit etc so everytime there is a guitar solo or guitar intros this F**king fizzing becomes apparent. Once the rest of the instruments kick in, the fizz is drowned out and it becomes bearable.

It doesn't happen if i am listening to the Radio, or between cd tracks, and it happens on 95% of my cds.

It is a totally different noise to the one experienced if the speakers are being overdriven (Too Loud) and there is nothing i can find in the doors or surrounds that resonate to cause this fizzing malarchy.

It sounds like a Kazoo type ov fizz but only on certain tracks. I thought it may be crap speakers and cool music but Limp Bizkit from me local radio station sounds fine.

Please treat me like a total techno retard on this one, and by all means state the obvious if you require information to help me sort this irritating "Thing" out.

Cheers

MIKEY

Not too sure what the fizzing is, but my guess is the CD Changer - Interference.....

Mighty strange though that the RDS should be rendered useles just by plugging in a phono cable and a multicore.....

I'd give the dealer grief.......

The only reason I can think it would brake the RDS is if its one of the cheapo FM based ones.

Do you control it via the head unit, or by a separate controller/display. If so then the CD signal is put on an FM carrier (normaly badly!) and the head unit is then tuned to that to make it work.

Does it only happen with the engine on ?(altenator/electrical interference)

Is it still audible when the CD is paused?

Can you get your hands on a 'zero bits' track (try a local car stereo shop) - if it happens on that too, then its interference of some sort.

It's one with a seperate controller, and yes it's tuned to 88.6FM!!!

It's not audiable when the cd is paused or inbetween tracks so it's not like it's a constant fizz that's being drowned out, it only happens on guitar biased sections of a song, now seeing as I play a guitar in a band, you can imagine how Pissed off it makes me

Anyway, thanks for the replies so far, suddenly I don't feel like a prat

Any more ideas before I go Dealer bashing?

Question

Incidentally, let's say that it is down to interference, what can I do about it given that i have a million and one other things that I want to spend me hard earned on, so I would like an alternative to going and buying £000's worth of top gear to rectify the potential problem

Dealer bashing should solve your solvency quandary..... get them to replace the entire lot....

I'm interested in what Kryten sez about the engine interference.... I thought that was usually a 'whine' (alternator noise)...

Out of interest what other types are there?

Sorry to take your post slightly off-topic

They've put an FM modulator based crock of **** cd changer in your car.

The fizzing is due to this being a really, really poor way of adding a cd-changer.

Get them to replace it with a real one.
