Default What MTB for a 10yr old boy?

Max budget £150, been looking at a few and have become totally confused! He won't be entering races and has a a decent BMX, but will give it grief like all 10yr olds, hence it'll need to still be in one piece and not disintegrate o'night. He's 1.45m tall and I'm favouring a XS adult MTB rather than a junior type bike.

The Decathlon bikes seem to be good VFM and have reasonable reviews:

Any thoughts on this or well spec'd alternatives?

D

I would look for a good second-hand one given your budget (not trying to be clever or funny) it's just the cheaper ones do not seem to last. OK he's not going to compete on it but knowing kids it will have a hard life.

I had thought of a decent second hand bike, and have been looking for a Specialized Hotrock 24, but haven't had any luck.....and the clock is now ticking!
(There's also something special about a new bike over a better spec'd second hand when you're 10!)

I have to agree, £150 won't get you very much new.

Got a Trek Y24 here with very little use, good little aluminum full suspension bike that cost about £300 a few years ago when new so not cheap for a kids bike.

Zohan - Been looking at ebay, but given the abuse kids' bikes get, I'd want to view first and there hasn't been one nr to me.

Ayde - thks for the offer, I'm heading towards a hardtail at the mo. (less maint)

No worries, if you change your mind I'm only after £80 for it.

Thread hijack, apologies - how do you decide between a hardtail or full suspension? I'm in the market for a new 2nd hand mountain bike but can't make up my mind whether a hardtail will suffice or not

If you plan to do a lot of down-hilling then a full suspension bike is for you, it not then buy one with front suspension, ideally with a 'lockout' on the front forks if you plan to use it on the road a lot.

Suspension robs alot of leg effort when riding on the road, I lock mine out on the front and went hardtail. If off road half lock works well for most

I recently bought one of these for my boy, awesome bike tbh, would have given my left bollock for one when I was a kid !

Your budget won't get you a durable bike new

Everyone beat me too it

Exactly what these 2 have said. I went for a hard tail as I do a combination of everything.

Apart from the terrible Ritchey components (not sure if they still use them) that will wear out when you look at the bike.

Simpler the better, no suspension or disk brakes, ours all went mad for a really cheap secondhand bike I bought off a bloke at work, paid £20 and they all used it for years, ignoring their bigger, heavier ones, everyone was quite attached to it and they didnt want to let it go so its ended up at the in laws for the younger grandkids, our youngest is still to be occasionally seen on it, legs stuck out as its too big.

I would say just keep it simple, I think cheap MTB's put kids off cycling for life, we had a cheap full susser and it weight 35 lbs, a kids bike ffs, my road bike is 20 lbs and I think that is key, needs to robust but not made of pig iron and weigh more than its rider.
