Default Gas Bottles - moving in garden

We moved into out new house a month or so ago - its not on mains gas.

We have a 6ft (ish) Calor gas bottle in the garden, it connects to our cooker via plastic pipe that is about 12" under ground. The gas bottle is literally just rolling around our garden.

For safety reasons, i want this bottle moved and also want another bottle - with some kind of fail-over valve. I want the bottle moved further away from the house, but am unsure how to extend the plastic pipe ?

I am not confident in doing the above and am unsure what type of professionnal handyman would be able to help.

Are there any legalities ie. Corgi around having bottled gas ?

Cheers

Don't know about your specific issues, but Corgi is now defunct. The new scheme is called "Gas Safe". So I would suggest you look for someone registered as Gas Safe and have a chat with them.

As far as I'm aware, you are not allowed to extend the Pipe work for safety reasons. You would have to replace the whole lot. No joins are allowed in the piping. Your caller bottles sound like the 47kg ones and are easily replaced. Where are you based? Are you sure they are calor. As alot of people seem to call all propane bottles calor when calor is just the supplier. To replace the bottles with calor is simple and all you have to do is call them up and they will come and deliver and swap the empty one. Prices are anything from around 40 quid upwards per bottle as long as you have an empty to give back otherwise you will have to pay a deposit for any extra bottles you hold.

Fixed LPG/propane installation should need a gas safe registered plumber appropiately qualified in LPG installation to inspect and sign off any work done (i.e not just 'any' gas-safe plumber ). It'll say what they are qualified in on their ID card.

Auto change over valves do exist and are a god send.

We have one in spain on a 10-way high pressure manifold runnning a boiler off two banks of five 11kg propane cylinders (house location makes it impossible to deliver larger cylinders). That routes into a regulator that has a safety shut off should gas pressure fall below the minimum (all ten cylinders empty), and needs to be manually reseting to restore supply.

Firstly I would be concerned about the bottle rolling around in the garden I would get it housed in a suitable cupboard. Then worry about changing the type etc.

Yes the bottle should be standing upright.

Not unless its a large tank that Calor or other comes to fill (non exchange), as this should be secure in the garden by means of a holder/mount. I have diesel tanks here that are mounted on railway sleepers, I know of calor tanks also mounted onto sleepers, or inbetween sleepers.

Does your tank look like this??

As these now get mounted below ground.

Or like this?

As it was rolling around the garden I would think it was a small bottle. I installed 2 underground 4000litre tanks in my brothers garden a few years back.

We have 4 LPG 47 Kg bottles with an automatic changeover device which changes to the 2 full ones when the original two become empty. It has a red arrow to remind you to order another 2 bottles.

We use the gas purely to heat water and to cook with. 2 bottles last for a very long time.

System has been going for 20 years without any problems.
