Default How do you sell a car with this constant insurance thing in force

I want to sell my old car privately, having already bought my new one. My insurance company are wanting £25 per week as temp cover while I am trying to sell the old car.

I am considering not insuring the car, and declaring it SORN. I've never SORNed a car before and do not understand the implications for someone else wanting to take it for a test drive. If the car is SORNed, and not insured, what steps does a prospective purchaser have to take in order to legally take the car for a test drive?

Any vehicle used on the road needs to be insured, so either you do it, or they do it at cost, having their own cover for their car isn't enough.

We had the same problem recently.

My wife bought her new Kuga and transferred her policy to it but we hadn't sold her Galaxy, we were getting quotes of around £100/month for insurance cover.

Luckily in the end we sold it to friends and they transferred their policy to it straight away otherwise not sure what we would have done.

Sell your car, leave the insurance running, switch it over when you buy the new one. I've done that for years anyway.

Yeah, a new car turned up that I could not miss, so I am now in the position of having two cars.

If I SORN the car, can the buyer just insurance and then take it for a test drive. I'm guessing not as the SORN thing may complicate matters.

How would you have done it previously ?

No insurance would mean no one can drive it before this new rule ..

And technically the car you're driving has to be insured by someone else.

You were definately lucky, every car on the road has to have its own insurance policy or be covered by a blanket company policy. Your own insurance is not enough.

Previously I would not have bothered to insure the car and just blocked it in with several others. Then, when someone wanted to drive the car, I would have requested they get temp cover on the car.

I cannot do this now, as either the car has my insurance, or its SORN. I don't like the cost of having to use my own insurance, so it looks like the car will have to be SORN. Will have to put it back on the road only when a serious buyer shows up, but what a lot of hassle

But I can use my insurance to get it MOT'd..... I also can't add it to my insurance as it isn't my bike ..... I can get it insured 3rd party but the expense isn't really worth it for the miles I'd do on it. So a bit of a pain all

get someone with a traders policy to tax it

It would appear so, but this is not so easy. As temp cover only lasts so long, and standard insurance policies cost a fortune if you cancel them.....

Not completely true (or wasn't). Dependeds whether your policy specifically states that the other vehicle does have seperate insurance or not.

Most do but some don't.

Notice that on stuff like road wars, they'd let the car carry on if a passenger had insurance even if the driver didn't.

Now any car with tax on must be insured. If it isn't taxed it can't go on the road, simple as. Does make it a mare for selling though. I'm about to be in the same situation. Looking at temp cover on the new car while I shift the old one.

On that note - Endsleigh, a company that doesn't even send out hard copy docs anymore charged £25 to update their records with the new plate for the car. Swinton, who send out a nice pack of stuff didn't have a fee to update my bike insurance as I transfered the plate from the car to the bike. Both policies underwritten by Royal & Sun Alliance.

I generally buy new car and insure it on a new policy, then when I've sold my old car I cancel that policy.

Buying new generally includes a weeks cover, covered by the Manufacturer.

This allows you to sell the old car.

Remember when insuring another car - only ONE vehicle can benefit from your NCD!! This means that the old car on the drive cannot have any NCD applied to it - it will be as if you are in your first year of Insurance!

It's getting awkward. But thank your local pikey and chav for this state of affairs!

With the new law all vehicles must be insured, so it doesn't matter what insurance you have, the car isn't legal.

Surely the buyer only has to telephone their insurer to get instant cover for the car as they buy it. It can then be "un-sorned" so that they can drive it away. I have never had a problem getting instant cover for any vehicle I have bought.
