If its sorned then it doesnt have tax .. so how do you test drive it ?

The person driving it would be ok, would be covered, but the car under this new law would be taken.

The car wouldn't be taken though! because legally the law isn't being broken at that moment when the person whos driving it is covered then so is the car under that policy just because anpr doesn't say its covered doesnt mean its not i drove away.

^^^ Indeed, I have a traders policy and I don't have to declare each vehicle I buy unless I keep it for more than 2 weeks. Hence vehicles are sometimes not on the Insurance Database but as i'm insured for any vehicle in my possession (even if i'm not the owner) and even if it is not insured elsewhere.

I didn't think that was how it worked ?

If you park the car and it bursts into flames taking four other cars with it, who's insurance would pay ?

You're covered to drive it ..

I dunno

^^ Does sound incredible though that you / others can be insured on a car under your policy even if it has no cover of it's own via the owner?!

Your really going too deep into it. It would be in the possession of whoever had the keys/car. So if parked on the owners drive the its in the owners possession isn't it.

Possession will be determined by laws already in place to decide these things.

Dude, I think the issue is you got stopped BEFORE the law changed.

My first post was to back you up. As it stood, as long as someone in the car had insurance, and the car was taxed/MOT'd you could drive away. Not all insurance for driving other cars stated that a policy must be in force on the other car.

I don't think you'd get away with it again.

The new law, quite simple, if it has tax, it must have insurance even if it is going to be stood in a garage for months. The only was to avoid insurance is to SORN the car but then it isn't allowed on the road...

Everyone with me?

Therefore, selling a car is tough. You can't transfer your insurance off it and rely on the buyer arranging temp/insurance because you must declare it SORN if it isn't insured = no test drives or an insurance cost nightmare.

In the real world though, unless you drive past an ANPR camera, the chances of getting caught driving without tax or insurance are pretty slim :

I mean when was the last time anyone on here saw a real live plod*

I think you were lucky then and got some undercooked bacon that didn't really know what they were doing, wouldn't be the first time!

If it's taxed, it must have insurance so in theory the police should be able to take the car off you. That said, it might be that legislation for those powers hasn't caught up with law making. Again, that wouldn't be the first time!

Erm, you just take out new policy on new car (or add it to existing if works out cheaper), keep existing policy on old car until sold, then cancel once sold??

Seems people are over complicating things????

Can't say I would risk having a car "off the road" un-insured, it could still get stolen and then you would be even more out of pocket.

The first point is true... but remeber you can only use no claims against one car. Do you really want to buy a new policy for a scooby then have to cancel it?

That's the tricky bit. Also, not sure just anyone can have a trader poolicy otherwise why wouldn't they just dish them out to all and sundry? (Genuine question)

When I sold my old car I ran over the temporary cover window so had to take out a new policy. However it then sold almost straight away. Could be wrong, but I'm sure as I then cancelled the policy within the statutory cooling off period I got my money back. Whether you can take that to the extreme and swap insurers every 2 weeks?!

Just to clear up the law on this.

"The new vehicle insurance law means that the registered keeper of a vehicle must keep it insured unless they've made a Statutory Off Road Notification"

Source: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring...ance/DG_186696

It also says the car could be impounded, doesn't say it will be. The vehicle registered keeper will be the one that gets the fine in the post, will probably get a reminder first. If you continue to keep the car uninsured and not SORN then you will run the risk of getting it taken away and crushed or going to court. That's how I see it anyway, if the police pull you and you are insured then no problem at that time.

I've passed two stations a day for the last three years and I've never seen a single copper outside either.

Although to be fair, most mornings I do usually see a couple parked up at the butty van in Adlington
