Obviously a nutter
Finders keepers losers weepers.
I would give it back if i saw it fall out of someones pocket.
i'd even get involved if i saw someone stealing it.
But wondering along and finding it, i would take it as karma and consider it fruit of the gods
And thank them kindly.
I'm still looking for a grand i put in a "safe place" about 4yrs ago

Other people who could have found the money, and probably didn't need it, would have kept it out of pure greed.
As the guy said, it could have been someones rent money and they may have needed it, obviously not as the guy is a lawyer so probably not short of a bob or two, I hope the lawyer shows his gratitude if and when he meets the man.
Just goes to show you can't judge a person by their looks.

Well i'm not so sure about the pure greed.
My view is slightly different, in that if the person that lost it really needed it then they should have taken better care of it ,and so i'm actually perfoming a service for them by keeping it and putting it to good use, whilst teaching them the valuable lesson to take better care of their money, for which my recompence is the aforementioned sum

I take my hat off to the bloke for his honesty, especially under his personal circumstances. I sincerely hope the lawyer was prepared to give him a substantial reward for his action.
It can never be justified to keep someone else's property if you find it. Finding specious excuses for not handing it in just does not wash and is a poor indication of the finder's character.

I found a ladies purse once in a puddle, it only had £30 in it and a few cards but I found the owners address in so I drove to her house and handed it in. When she answered the door she moaned her purse was wet, said she hoped I was not expecting a reward then slammed the door in my face
No reward necessary but a thank you would have been nice

i'd hand in a purse with cards and personal stuff, but an envelope full of cash.
Please
I once when a small boy along with a friend handed in a hand bag that had £10 back when that was a lot of money, and guess what when the six weeks was up and no one had claimed it, it had magicly disappeared along with it's contents, at the local nic, and guess what i don't trust coppers as far as i can spit either..

The missus left her bag on top of her car when leaving Sainsburys the other day - drove home, realised what she had done and rushed back.
Someone had found it on the floor of the car park & handed it in so she got it back - all her cards and cash inside were still there.
There are still some nice people around I guess.

I dropped a fiver once. as soon as i realised an old biddy picked it up and was rushing to put it in her pocket.. She saw me and asked if it was mine and I felt guilty so I said no. Stole the bitches scooter she left out side though joke...
I rememeber hearing once a similar thing where someone found a bag of cash on a bus. When the person collected it from the fuzz station the copper said are you going to give them a reward he just said year tell em cheers n walked off....

It's all well and good sat on ones high horse whilst on tinternet with ones cyberspace persona waxing lyrical about high moral standards.
My own life experience has shown me that the world is full of people who can talk the talk, but very few that can walk the walk.

My Wife left her wages + holiday pay on the roof of the car the day before we got married 32 yrs ago, a guy handed them in to the place she worked , when my best man read out the cards etc the next day.... we had a telegram from the guy.... He wrote " Hope you look after your husband better than your money" still have the telegram in the loft somewhere.

Found a wallet last December with several hundred in it near the train station when dropping the wife off.
It had home and mobile numbers in it.
Called both numbers - the bloke sent his wife around with a couple of bottles of very nice wine (one red one white) and I gave her the wallet fully intact.
Not sure if I would do the same if I was completely destitute though!!!
One for me to think about.
I sincerely hope the lawyer guy in the case above does something of a similar magnitude towards the guy that handed that money in.
To the lawyer, that amount of money is - what? a day or two work?
To the finder, that kind of money means food for the best part of 6 months (albeit McD's)

What you could do is to imagine yourself in the position of the person losing a significant sum of money.
How would you feel towards the bloke who kept it or on the other hand to someone who handed it in or returned it to you?
Nothing to do with being on a high horse, it is down to simple and straightforward honesty.
I would rather praise someone with those sort of ideals rather than talk him down for being of good character and thinking of someone else rather than himself.
