Default Help with Car Repair (dealer)

I don't think this will be a problem as the garage is friendly, but I want to have the correct information when I go there later so any help is appreciated.

The power steering failed in my car and the dealer changed the pump (£700!). I didn't think this was the problem as it was intermittent rather than constant, but okay.

Twenty minutes after picking up the car this morning the "Steering Assist Failure" came up again so they obviously didn't fix the problem.

How does that work? They probably fitted a part unnecessarily, do I have to pay even more to rectify the fault or should they fix it with no with cost?

Did you keep the old part (rule 1 of garage work)?

trouble is these days with the cost of labour its cheaper to replace parts with new until the problem is solved rather than charge for the diagnostic time. They will claim it is part of the diagnostics as in their expert opinion that was the part that needed replacing.

IMO they should give a hefty discount against the new part and do some more diagnostics FOC.

I'm owed £12,500 by an Asian/British Asian run LTD company, they sold me a dodgy EVO and did unsatisfactory repairs. I took them to court and won but they went into criminal receivership

I don't even get the £5500 solicitors fees back.

Be careful if you want to take it further!!

The car is a Focus ST and it is a local Ford Dealer. It is a family run business, so I do not think they are trying to con me, just made a rash "it must be that" decision. I do not want to pay any more though.

As for expensive: The part was £500 and £200 to fit.

They have the old part still.

I should see what their answer is when you go back. If they insist that the original steering pump was u/s then I should ask for the old one back. Hopefully they will do the rest of the job correctly.

Welcome to the world of diagnostic repairs...

pump has prolly been replaced because thats what the diagnostic machine has reported as showing a fault.

The root cause thats gave the fault, may not be the pump, but something totally unrelated... but because the machine shows the pump as the error code, thats what gets replaced.

Alternatively it could be a loose wire or a missed plug when they installed it... get it checked before kicking off

Bring back the days of good old mechanical diagnosis and investigation.

You can try and get your wonga back, but i bet they'll insist the fault is with your part

You took it in for them to solve the proble if they have not then they willneed to do further work if the work required and the problem is related to the pump they have changed then I imagine the additional cost will be yours to bear (with a goodwill gesture from them)

If the problem turns out not to have been the old pump they should refit that and correct the problem and refund any difference you have paid as you took it to them in good faith and they said they would do it.

As long as the garage acted in good faith, and you agreed that they could go ahead, I would guess that you don't have a legal leg to stand on. A garage can't possibly know what a fault is, first time, every time. They must on occasion get it wrong. Intermittent faults are notoriously difficult to diagnose, with good reason.

Thank you. It is going back on Tuesday now as I don't want to be without the car for the weekend. I spoke to them and they will do some checks, they were not happy.

When it works I will probably sell it and buy a Nissan Juke as the car has been 'unlucky' for me.

Is there a common fault on focus ST power steering systems.

My m8 had one and he had quite a few problems with the power steering.

Yes there is an inherent fault with the power steering, but related to the hoses. I had mine recalled and fixed (it went wrong two years ago).

I spoke to Ford customer service yesterday and they would probably have contributed to the pump failure replacement BUT I didn't have the car serviced at a Ford dealer. So out of the services I only have one stamped in the book.

Car is still with the dealers and they are 'sorting it out'.

Ford just called me back and although they can't contribute to the pump they have given me a full service that they will pay the garage for.

I'm quite impressed with that to be honest as I wasn't expecting to hear from them ever again.

Fed up with the Focus. It appears to have developed a couple of other faults. So bought a Nissan Juke (yes I know!) on Monday and had it delivered today.

Trying my hardest to keep my beer down. Still looks horrible from the side. Suppose it makes the driver look better looking though
