How backwards is this?
Just been reading on BBC news about a certain footballer and some Big Brother bird with fake juggs.
Then I saw this in the links section... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-south-asia-13264301
How barbaric is that It this belief backwards or is it only sections like what used to happen in China?
Glad I've got a son

I wasn't allowed to know the sex of my daughter at the scan because it was hospital policy. This was in Nuneaton. You draw your own conclusions from that.

In Wrexham where I grew up all my friends found out the gender of their un born child, where it was able to be seen, yet here in the midlands myself or anyone I know who has had a baby wasn't given the option of knowing.
I put it down to the fact that Wolverhampton is a lot more culturally diverse than Wrexham, so certain measures need to be on place to stop things happening. Things such as what this thread highlights.
It doesn't just happen in Asia and China, it happens everywhere. It's very sad, but to some people, it is a way of life

Its the lineage thing, the mentality is "You must have a son to carry the family name forward. The family name is everything"! Being married to a Japanese woman I know this all to well as i've seen it in her family. With my wifes brother & sister in-law, although they haven’t stooped to abortion to get rid of the girls.
First two kids they had were girls and the pressure put on them by my father in-law to have another child (a boy) was immense. Third child is a boy and the importance put on him is ridiculous!
I've also seen what its like in India having friends who live in New Delhi and they've just had a baby girl and their family basically shunned them after her birth. Friends are just happy to have a child as they've been trying for years.
Also in india, the article touches on it, is the dowry which is typically paid to the grooms family, so this is a way of getting wealth from the brides family. If you have no weath then this is a good reason to have "boy" children. I know dowrys are illegal in india, but only in law. The practise is still widely in use but its all behind very closed doors.

It is shocking but it is their culture right or wrong. For most people just having a baby that is healthy is enough but when peer pressure and alike come into play it is amazing what people will do.

So what happens in many years time when their lovely sons have no girls to date?
The family name stops if they can't have kids of their own
