My daughter has just been diagnosed with clinical depression and is on anti-depressants and having CBT. I found http://www.clinical-depression.co.uk/ useful to understand what is happening to her.

Depression is one of the most awful illnesses around. It doesn't just affect the sufferer, but those in his/her family and friends too.

And there are still those out there who will just tell sufferers to, "Pull yourself together!"

They seem to think that because it's never affected THEM, it doesn't exist, or is easy to deal with, and/or the sufferer is somehow "weak" for getting it.

My heartfelt best wishes go to anyone suffering from it, AND their families/friends!

Usually best not to request or seek advice on a car forum with more than it's fair share of c*nts. I found out the hard way but I'm ok now... honestly... really... I am, yes... I am really.

Abilify is an anti-psychotic, i take it too with anti-depressants. Has saved my life.

Major depression is life-wrecking and debilitating, wouldnt wish it on anyone.

i suffer from bouts of depression but have tried to stay away from drugs, but it seems to be coming to the time i may need them. i just find it really hard to go to the doctors as i have a couple of people in my family who are the ones who are always telling me to put up with it and shut up.

I'm no expert in depression but I would say if you feel you need help then go and get it and to hell with what anyone else says. You are brave enough to admit you have a problem, take the next step and help yourself fix it. Family should be supporting you, not dismissing how you feel.

Depending upon your exact situation (again I'm no expert) you may benefit from drugs, but you may just need face to face help from a professional. I would imagine it depends on whether depression comes from an actual inbalance or if it's due to 'just' how you cope in life/your experiences causing you to feel depressed.

All I would say, as a total stranger, is speak to your GP and go from there, but don't be ashamed of how you feel. Depression may not have a visible wound or break, but it doesn't mean it should just be ignored.

Good luck to you.

Those people in your family don't understand the illness. The drugs will help patch things up but, as others have mentioned, CBT will provide you with long- term insight and strategies for staying well off-medication. I've had depression at various points throughout my life and probably will in the future - I'm not ashamed or embarrassed by that, it's just the way I'm wired-up. Take it easy.

You can only go on so long putting a face on, believe me, I'm getting there myself.

Look at it another way as you are open to depression existing and not just people being 'silly'. Read back what you have said on here and imagine I had posted what you just have...what advice would you give me? If you would say, go and get some help, then that is exactly what you need to do.

Sometimes you need to put yourself in the shoes of the 'advisor' and imagine what you would say, then take that advice yourself. Sometimes, even in times of personal struggles, we are the best at giving advice, but the worst at taking it.

Please for your own sake go and speak to someone qualified. You never know, you might not need a life of drugs, just some coping mechanisms so to speak.

There are millions of people doing the very same thing, day in and day out. Really push your GP to refer you to a CBT specialist if you can. The drugs will sort the organic side of the illness (serotonin levels and so forth) and will give you the lift you need to tackle the underlying issues via CBT or a similar therapy. A short way down the road you'll look back and be proud of the person who took those first brave steps.

I could probably help people with this stuff even if I am unqualified...I'd still be fcuked up though. A prime example of giving advice is easier than taking it.

Hello mate, Thanks for this thread, Im taking mirtazapine, really helped me, maybe you should try that first, doesnt have most of the side effects you get with other medication, although I have felt the depression coming back lately, at least I can wake up in the morning and feel like Ive slept. I started cbt bur had to quit due to starting uni, but im trying to get back into it, focuses more on here and now, rather than dragging your past up.

Don't understand it myself, surely it's just a state of mind? Isn't it just a case of looking at life more positively ...

I'm currently in the process of waiting for CBT. God it takes ages... I was pretty sane to begin but by the time I get some appointments I'm going to be a full fledged maniac

Hope it comes soon for you.

During your wait for the therapy,

1. Try going to bed at right time, and getting out of bed at right time (Unlike me, of course. I just have a weird body clock, like my weird self). Try having a reasonable 6-8 hours sleep a night.

2. Eat healthy food

3. Drink plenty of water

4. Avoid alcohol, recreational drug intake

5. Take some form of physcal exercise

Good luck to you and to others on this thread.

the problem is when you ask for a referral they will say yes no probs. someone will be able to see you 12 - 18 months. poeple need help now, not in 12 - 18 months. unless you're prepared to pay someone £70 an hour it aint gonna happen. thankfully i have been off anti depressants for 3 years now and my outlook is much brighter. still, i was a mess for 7 years after my marriage break up. not 7 years i would want to live again or wish on anyone.
