What is it with old people and M&S food.
Just popped into M&S today for some "eat out pasta". Basically its full of old people getting half a dozen items. And when i say old, i mean really old. Whats going on.
Myself, i've never thought it any different to most other food.

LIDL's is M&S Quality food at less than Tesco prices .... some of us Old Gits know that!!
But, sad to say, there are some 'up their own ****'s' types who wouldn't step in a Lidl or aldi if the world had ended!! Why should Pikies have all the best food at the best prices?

We tried buying from Aldi for some things and Tesco for other things and ended up spending more! I know this is M&S but just a word to say that our Tesco veg section is crap - soft bruised and malformed - and thats the onions!!
My grandparents always shopped on a Thursday and almost exclusively and M&S but that was late 80s.
We have a new M&S in town which some more of a token gesture towards the clothes but more focused on food and homeware. £4 for a sarnie? er, f*ck off.
Greggs roasted ham and lettuce on brown £1.80 FTW

I usd to think M&S was for the poor when I was growing up.Marks and Sparks etc
How the hell they turned into a posh store I don't know.
Maybe old people still see them as a cheapo place

Only thing I go in there for is Cakes and the 2 can dine for £10 meal deals although I think the latter has gone up.
Must say I dont go to Morrissons that much but their fresh fish selection is blinding. However their "The Best" range is a poor effort compared to Tesco Finest / Sains TTD

My mother has been known to get close to a 6 figure salary - she will still go straight to the discount section in Tesco.

Ah sorry, this was for the sit down bit - to be fair it was all posh bread and frilly salad but still not worth the extra. We were up there buying stuff for the kitchen and went to eat there - complete rip off.

A customer of mine makes things for many of the supermarkets
The ingredients and recipes for M&S food items is way better than that of say Tesco/Waitrose/Asda etc
Basically M&S don't put preservatives in the products made for them - the others mentioned put all sorts of crap in there to preserve shelf life.
One product for example, in M&S it has a shelf life of 3 days - Tesco's shelf life on the equivalent item is 10 days.

M&S food has always been good quality and I can well understand it being popular to many people.
Recntly we have noticed that the quality appears to have dropped a bit, whether that is permanent remains to be seen.

Seems I'll have to check m&s put then. Even though I'm 38 I feel at least 2 decades too young to go there. I assume the early morning on a Sunday rule applies for reduced items? ;-)

Excellent thread
I've shopped at Marks for many, many years. Unfortunately in that time i've got closer in age to the old people referred to by the OP! But it still does my head in why the real oldies choose a Saturday to stumble round at 0.001mph when they have ALL fekkin week to do their shopping! Perhaps there's more "going on".
The food in Marks definitely IS a cut above all other supermarket brands, with perhaps the exception of Waitrose with whom i'd say it's on a par. And they don't have a proper "fresh" fish counter etc, basically because they don't have the room. But lots of people are put off by the old person image, but i don't think Marks are bothered; that's a stable customer base in times of economic downturn.

I have to agree with Telboy and DingDong.
Food's great from our local M&S and we don't have a Lidl or an Aldi within 15 miles.
I've also noticed the shufflers in there - I feel like an embryo when I shop.
