erm, it will be 1180 due as of 31st Jan 2011. Otherwise a fine will be issued.

IIRC, there was also accruing interest or something.

sorry - hope I'm wrong.

Return has to be filed by the 31st AND payment made on or before 31st for Self Assessment.

Is your girlfriend PAYE?
If she is I think she can opt to pay it through her tax code or in a lump sum.

My return is sent to HMRC around November but I have to pay up by 31st Jan and then 31st July.

Although my wife is PAYE she also has to do a Self Assessment - our accountant files the return in enough time for HMRC to send a statement of account with the amount to pay before Jan 31st.

Log into the S.A. website, the amount you owe and when to pay it is the first thing displayed.

My accountant used to tell me how much to pay and when saying "do ensure you have sufficient funds in your account to meet these payments"

I could have kicked him in the teeth

Payment via PAYE is only available if you request it and your return is filed before 31 December.*

HMRC will eventually send out a paper demand.*

Most probably in the same envelope as the £100 penalty.

They will send you a paper demand, but you will have incurred interest by the time they do.
If your g/f thinks she may have a problem paying, give them a ring. They have moved on from the draconian image they had a few years ago and are quite helpful.

Is she self employed? Or has she been at any point?

Just ramp up her expenses and claim it back. That way even if it's submitted late, she should get a refund.

There are some nice books out there which tell you how to claim tax back on various things from PAYE, expenses, loans, costs, inheritance etc.

And you can claim against the cost of the book

Bit late now, best advice is to put away 40% of your earnings, you'll nearly always get a personal tax rebate that way.

The revenue are helpful? Muahahahahahahahahahahaha.

Not to us, they weren't when the system lost one of our SA forms done on computer. Took us THREE YEARS to sort out THEIR mess.

And not to my son who was on an emergency code ALL LAST YEAR, as he never had permanent work, despite them accepting that yes, he WOULD get 743L like everyone else.

Plus he couldn't have the extra back UNTIL he got permanent work, despite being in dire straights money wise. He's STILL getting it in dribs and drabs.

They aren't helpful AT ALL, they are a bunch of ***** who are answerable to no-one.
