Queensland - Cyclone Yasi
Arguably the biggest storm to ever hit a populated area is in the process of starting to wreak havoc in Queensland near Cairns.
It is a category 5 cyclone whereas the one that hit Darwin in the 1974 was a category 4 - that killed nearly 100 people. The winds in the centre of this storm are up to 180mph.
The resultant tidal suges from Yasi are the biggest worry and all this in a state that has just been suffering a month of flooding after the effects of an earlier cyclone.
Of course we can't get any news on this as the only place that matters in the world is frigging Egypt Why are the media so f**king myopic?

I wouldn't want to be anywhere near it, one thing Aus is good for is mad weather, experienced quite a bit of it whilst out there but this is on another level entirely.
My mates mum lives in Cairns and she has flown down to Sydney to stay with him, cant blame her.

Well you won't do as all the BBC can report on right now is bloody Egypt which is a cesspit of their own (Egypt's) making. Meanwhile Queenslanders are being hit by the forces of nature on a scale hitherto unseen yet the BBC have virtually no interest!

Well, a small slot was made for it on the news tonight. At the end, before going to the local news, they ended with the comment:
Again, the main news and babbled on about Cairo. No mention of Australia.
A real shame, as the short news report was really upsetting. Those poor people

There's significant coverage of the storms, particularly on BBC News 24 and I really hope the people there are kept safe. Perhaps it won't be as devastating as people fear.

Here in Brisbane we had the flood water literally at our front door, we evacuated and emptied everything from our house with help of neighbors, mates and total strangers, stripped the house bare in 1.5 hours! We were very lucky to only get water upto the front garden wall, but others on our street had it upto there roofs, we had no power for 6 days and never complained once, because so many people lost everything. The cyclone that hit last night is about 1000miles from us but that must be 100 times worse than the floods as the wind traveling at 280kph ripping houses to bits and everything in it's path must be so terrifying. Upto now 2 people are missing, and 175,000 have lost power. Listening to the news it's the same story as when the floods hit, everybody helping out be it strangers friends, family all with the same attitude, oh well when it's gone we will all help each other, rebuild and start again.

You would think that they had suffered enough already with the terrible flooding.
I hope that the damage from the cyclone is not too widespread or that it takes too many lives.

Been in BrizzyVegas (aka Brisbane) for 4 years now, durring which....
1x day over 40º Celcius (only 32º today and glorioius blues skies)
3x dust storms, each one less dusty then the last (outback top soil being blown into the Pacific Ocean)
1x gale (The Gap, Brisbane) that blowed roofs off houses (we dont live in The Gap, thankfully)
1x flood, (not us, we live on a hill, in the outer suburbs)
Of course nationwide, there is often floods / fires / cyclones simultaneouly, albeit in differant parts of the country.
Then again, I suppose the country is continent sized.
Oh, lots of BIG thunderstorms here in BrizzyVegas, torrential rain, but thankfully never seen golf ball sized hail, but that does happen too.
