Why aren't we phasing out QWERTY keyboards?

That could all be bollocks though.

It wasn't for slowing people down it is (was) about positioning of the fingers and grouping of commonly used letters.
I don't see a replacement ever happening, there have been a few tries. I trialled a "keyboard" with just five buttons that you operated with one hand and pressed a combination. I got reasonably proficient, but then thought "what is the point?".

Anyhow, no matter what the layout, if you type often enough you 'get used to it' so what's the problem? We need to look further afield than the keyboard 'layout' and think about interacting with computers in a different fashion. Voice control, for example.

As above DARB it was done so that the typewriter keys were less likely to hit each other and cause a jam. It isn't necessarily the most logical layout but it is now the one we are all used to.
There have been variations over the years though I'm sure at least one other system was in use at some point....

I *REALLY* hate, with a passion, ABC keypads....
The council by us replaced every fricking pay & display machine at knee height that you have to enter your reg number into on a ABC keypad.
They REALLY REALLY boil my ****.....
Am I in a wheelchair - err NO - when did I ever see a wheelchair user using one - err NEVER - let all cater for the 95th percentile shall we....
Fecking tree hugging, letil eating, sandal wearing public feckin servants - my ****

It would HAVE to be more intuitive: we already know our alphabet, why have to learn a weird jumble of letters before we can type? It makes no sense.

Why don't we just change the alphabet, that's gotta be easier, just change a few posters at primary schools, sorted, new alphabet, all keyboards are fine then, everyone happy

No, people who learned on QWERTY boards could continue, anyone coming through now would LEARN on an ABC board, after some years QWERTY boards are phased out.

The best keyboard I've ever had was one of them microsoft natural keyboards. It is still QWERTY but it definitely helped me learn how to type at a much more advanced speed.

I agree! this is a prime example of a waste of money/PC gone mad.If they just let people with a Blue Badge park for free(small revenue loss) then they wouldn't have had to do anything. Also if there is a high cost car park then they could have a Oyster Card type blue badge & a reader at the exit that charges them when they leave.
Whats that got to do with a QWERTY keyboard???????

But that's my point: it could still BE industry standard, but in 25 years, it would be no longer. Yet we aren't even starting with ABC keyboards, just persisting with an anachronism.
It's like saying, "Well we aren't going to use digital cameras as photographers and film processors learned their trade on film cameras." Or, "We aren't going to have mobile phones as no-one knows how to use them, they were trained on old dial types.)
We didn't do that, and many other forward thinking moves weren't put off, so WHY cling to this?

A digital camera has significant benefits over film.
A mobile phone has significant benefits over a landline.
An ABC keyboard is exactly the same as a QWERTY keyboard but with the letters in different places. Changing it would be a massive hassle for a very large percentage of the world, for absolutely **** all benefit. There is absolutely no point in letting this bother you!
