Tax Return - Help !
Been trying to sort this for a few weeks with the deadline looking, have been PAYE for the period in question but have been asked to do a return as I was contracting about three years ago, so dug my details out for the government gateway and logged in but it asks for a pin, I activated it a while back so I cant understand why its asking, do you need a new one each year ?
I have my Unique Taxpayers reference, Postcode and NI number which is asks for but no pin,
it then says
"The information you entered below has already been used to enrol for this service, and this service does not allow known facts to be enrolled with more than once. Please contact the help desk for the Self Assessment (SA) on 0845 60 55 999."
Have tried ringing them (my tax office, Salford) on eight occasions and just get some really crap music for ten minutes then I get bored and hang up, tried the government gateway help line and that just dumped me off, sometimes I seem to get different results, also there is Self Assesment online which isnt through the gateway, whats that for ?
Am assuming its April 2009 to April 2010 they are interested in, I only earnt money through PAYE, so do I put anything in when I do eventually get in or is it a nil return.
Jesus, it is such a pain in the ****, I dont owe them anything but I suppose I will get fined £100 for being late

no same id & password
yes, when you "tailor" your return - select and just fill in the employment section then submit
if you had no other earnings and have your P60/P11D should take no more thant 40 mins - start to finish
do you have the GATEWAY ID card they sent you with the long number on

hello, this is millsy3's wife who is an accountant. once you are enrolled for the self assessment online it shouldnt need a new pin each year.it sounds like you are trying to re-register. you need to phone the helpline number that you mentioned, they are a nightmere getting hold off but you the maximum you should be on hold is about 20mins, i think the opening times are 8am to 8pm so perhaps try at 8am when it should be quieter than say dinner time.
If the only income for the year in question is employment income then you will have to state the income as shown on the P60 for 2009-2010 and if you got a p11d form (expenses and benefits) then this needs to be entered. As you have been issued to do a return you will need to do it and yes you will get fined £100 if it is late, however if you do send the return in after the deadline the revenue will usually limit the fine to the amount of tax due so as all your tax should have been paid via PAYE there shouldnt be any tax due.
The next step is that you either need to write or phone the tax office and say you only have employment income and make them not issue a return for 2010-2011. it is normal for them sometimes to leave the record open for a few years after you have ceased self employment, perhaps it needs somebody at their end to actually look at what you are sending in.

Cheers, have the card Hodgy and am logging in to the gateway but it has Enrolled Services as "Motoring Online" and all the others as available, when I click on Self Assesment it tells me this,
"The information you entered below has already been used to enrol for this service, and this service does not allow known facts to be enrolled with more than once. Please contact the help desk for the Self Assessment (SA) on 0845 60 55 999."
Millsy3's wife, cheers, will give them a ring, it is so annoying have been trying on and off for ages.

OK --- If you have the card -- it is just the long number plus a password
I assume you are going here
https://online.hmrc.gov.uk/login?GAR...%2Dassessment/
give them a call - I have always found them v helpful
good luck - and I don't think they are as draconian over the fines as people say

As above, assuming you know the userid and password, google for "inland revenue self assessment", then click the link. Option on the right to login to enter/submit a tax return.
Currently, I'm hanging on the phone waiting for an advisor..... Scratch that, speaking to one.

I've today been advised by HMRC NOT to submit a return. As they haven't requested one, apparently I don't have any particular deadline.
They just want savings and dividend info off me for 8/9 and 9/10.
Shame really, as finding all those random bits of paper is the major bloody effort for me in completing the thing.
Currently waiting on a couple of tax vouchers but I should be really to go early next week.
