Thailand worth going for a holiday
I have heard a lot of good things recently about Thailand but I have always been put off I watch to many sky programs lol.
Is it safe to go there on Hoilday? We would be looking for a nice hotel and great beaches.
Where are the best places to go ? I don't fancy Bangkok.
Is it still cheap out there?
Thanks for the help

Don't be put off by Trouble in Thailand type programmes, the country still has alot going for it. It's not quite the beauty it once was, mass tourism has seen to that but still well worth a visit. The food alone makes it a knock out.
Bangkok is worth spending a few days in.
I've not been for about 6 years but there was a time I went to that part of the world every year. So I'll let those who have been more recently recommend places, but that to some extent also depends on your budget.
Good luck
ps not sure if you are married but Thai girls (not chick boys!) are gorgeous!!

Fella I work with goes at least twice a year with his mates. He reckons its a great place you just need to keeps your wits about you or you could end up with a handful (literally)
Not sure exactly what area he visits but he reckons prices are very reasonable compared to Europe

Not sure about Thailand but would definately recommend the island of Phuket - only 17miles approx from end to end, brilliant people and enough to do for a few days/week max.
We ended up going out to a few islands and seeing where they filmed the film 'The Beach'.
Stayed in Hilton Resort - 3 hours massage for £35'ish - can't beat it!!!

Last time I went the Bhat was about 52 to the pound and a bottle of beer cost 68 bhat.
The food was cheap and was plentiful, the people are amazing and the place is extremely clean.
I didnt spend much time on beaches as I was on a golf tour.
Stay clear of Pattaya if you are taking a wife or girlfriend.

You couldn't pay me to go back to Thailand!
We should have been there for three days but were forced to stay an extra week (protestors took over the airport the day we were due to fly home) it was a massive inconvenience and caused a lot of stress.
I know we were unlucky, friends have been and loved the place.
"One night in Bangkok and the world's your oyster
The bars are temples but the pearls ain't free
You'll find a god in every golden cloister
And if you're lucky then the god's a she
I can feel an angel sliding up to me"

Pattaya is a dump.
Dirty and polluted.
Serious nightlife for the single man though.

i spent 3 weeks there in october. 5nights in bangkok, 10 nights on phi phi island and 7 nights in phuket.
i dont like cities but it was good in bangkok to go and see all the temples. very cheap to get around in tuk tuks or ferries. hotels are very cheap, from about £20 a night and very nice.plenty shops and places to eat. and cheap massages, about £10 for an hour... and not that type u dirty gits!!!... i was with the misses!!!(...unfortunatly) plenty of bars too, but in patong but get harrassed on streets by people trying to get u to go and see a ping pong show... where you go in for a free show then get a massive bill for your drinks!!
phi phi was amazing, 2hour ferry trip there tho. we stayed at phi phi resort and it was well expensive. it had 2 bars and was £25 each for an ok meal. the busier part of the island( monkey beach ) was cheaper and had more shops and bars. very nice beaches. saw a few lizards and snakes out there, 1 was a rattle snake when i was in the jungle by myself. plenty fish in the water if you like snorkeling.
phuket was better, pattiya had plenty bars and, restraunts.. the drinks cost more in bangor road but thats busiest bit on a night. lots of ladyboys in the crocodile club. there funny tho. nice beaches but there was a lot of crap that was washed up, dead fish, rubbish, i even saw 2 syringes. but people did clear it up thru the day.
was extremely fukt off after a few days of getting asked for taxi, dvds.massage, or jet skis and parasailing. i thought it would be cheap out there but was about the same if not more expensive for food and drink than it is here. if you do go dont book day trips from the hotels. barter the taxis , tours and shopskeepers down. lots of fake clothing everywhere out there. mainly aussies and south africans on hol there. felt safe everywhere we went.

Funny you should mention thailand as I'm in Bangkok at the moment
Personally I love the place.. the thai's are really friendly ( especially the girls if thats your thing ) and once you get here you can holiday as cheap or as expensive as you like. The climate, although tropical is, at this time of the year ok, not too hot/humid. Some great places to visit and stunning scenery, beaches, temples etc - Phuket has been mentioned ( expensive IMO ) Chaing Mai, Hua Hin, Koh Samui....
If you like sports while on holiday Asia is great for golf now and some of the courses in thailand are simply stunning.
Getting around is cheap, taxis especially so by comparison to UK prices.. Car hire is reasonable and fuel is cheap ( about 70p/litre at current exchange rate) although it can take awhile to get used to the rather 'erratic' traffic.
I was out here 4 times last year and prob will do the same again in 2011
On an 'expensive' note I was looking at a Audi R8 convertible today in a shopping mall and because of the high import tax on imported goods the car was for sale at 17,900,000 thai bht which in round figures is £358,000
