Angry C4 film of fishermen admitting Tesco's catch dolphin when fishing for Tuna!

Ch4 Hugh's fish fight the have open video from a one of the Tesco's employed fishing boats where the staff chat casually about catching Shark, Turtle and Dolphin in the big nets they use this goes to the factory that cans Tuna for Tesco's and it appears might carry the Dolphin friendly symbol on the label!

Tesco's have issued a statement saying this isn't true (because of course the fisherman on the boat full of Tuna and the bodies of the other fish caught up in the same nets would know what he caught would he!! )

Not the 1st time Tesco's have been shown to mislead about animal welfare, last time the comment from their PR Guru was the customers dont care about animal welfare and that is why we dont clearly label our Chicken to show if they are genuine Free range or battery farmed with a pretty picture looking like their Free Range on the label to mislead

i hope they hang their heads in shame

Chances are by time these Turtle, Dolphins, Sharks or ******* mermaids get onboard after being hauled through the nets (or what ever method of fishing these boats use) they are dead anyway.

plenty more dolphins in the sea

Cant imagine how you could lessen the effect other than abandoning purse nets

Which they do, plenty of tuna with "rod and line" written on it in the supermarkets now and at no significant cost to the normal stuff.

I guess though mass market produced foods (packets, ready meals, mass produced sarnies) aren't as discriminating about the source though and want the cheapest available because of the quantities they buy.

Cool

I don't see how you can avoid catching all sorts if you are using nets?

I don't know much about commercial fishing, but surely no matter what sort of nets you are using, once you get a certain amount of whatever in there, the size of the holes becomes irrelevant because everything else gets caught up in the fish?

I have to say that ripping the mouths out of Tuna fish & letting them drown isn't that kind and decent either...

But I thought the program was good and something does need to be done about reducing "collateral damage"...

Rod and line only catches the tuna not everything in the Sea,

The point is its labeled by Tesco as dolphin friendly which it isnt those happy killing dolphins can eat this those who would rather not should have a choice.

Not all the supermarkets use these ships Sainsburys again seem to have higher standards of animal welfare

Who really gives a toss either way? Animals die, people die get over it, or you could start your own save the dolphins page of facebook if it bothers you that much?

Humans (or at least us in the West) are ***** and simpletons.

Just because we project our own subjective values on Dolphins with their 'human-like' qualities (and permanent smile lol), why should it be any more tragic that they perish in the nets, than any of the other poor collateral damaged-species (but which aren't so 'cute'/intelligent).

Isn't ALL life sacred? (as he swats a fly )...

RA Dunk Your right it bothers me, it bothers me that Tesco lie on there labels and therefore you and i cant make decision about what to buy.

As you said you and i will both die but i do give a toss and you dont so dont bother reading this thread as you dont give a toss go and find something you do care about and read about that

Joz8968 the point is that Tesco should not claim to be dolphin/turtle friendly with the way they catch Tuna when they just net all of them and then drown them in their nets.

What you eat is your choice but the labels should not make false claims

I know I know. I was just being argumentative (with myself! ), as I was bored.

I love dolphins too...... Can't eat a whole one though.
