Default The Internet - be careful what you say

Twitter is being ordered by the US government via the courts to hand over all Tweets relating to the Wikileaks exposure of US government cables including names, addresses and personal details of who made them.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-12141530

Twitter has always pointed out that it complies with all local laws etc. but has also prided itself on being a place for frank and open exchanges.

If it now complies with the order how many people are going to feel comfortable about using it.

I stay away from FB and Twitter and the likes for other reasons, but I am not sure I would be too happy about them handing my details over just because I had said something in a Wikileaks discussion.

Of course there is no real difference between them and Scoobynet except that SN is less likely to be subpoenaed by the US government I guess.... espcially given its broadly right wing demographic... more likely they would give the place a pat on the back

They already have the right to monitor whatever is written on the Net as far as I know.

Correct.

With the reference to Twitter, Courtney Love has been taken to the court of no love by someone she apparently psychotweeted against. It's all getting very serious there.

Well yes, but psychotic behaviour is just that whether it is physcial or electronic stalking.

The trouble is there is generation growing up who think that what they do online is immune form the law. It's why they don't steal DVDs but think nothing of downlaoding films illegally from Torrent sites and the lieks and then actually think that makes them smart.

What this case shows is that you are actually less immune than you probably were before the net existed as anything you do online is logged.

The veil of anonymity makes people think they are safe to say and do what they like, nothing could be further from the truth in reality. We even see it on here with libellous comments being thrown around for fun and one day something said even on a little forum like this will come back and bite someone on the ***.

So just like email that's hosted in the USA, you are subject to USA terror laws for anything posted in-country.

That means extradition and worse case rendition flights to Guantanamo..

Folks on here need to read up on the law..

It is not a blanket search on anybody who has posted about Wikileaks - it is seven named individuals that are known associates/supporters of Wikileaks.

I suspect SN is safe - unless the seven are members on here. Maybe Julian Assange is PSLewis?!

Yes I know it is only seven for now, but it is the precedent that is being set that is interesting.

SN mnybe safe from the US government as far as Wiklileaks goes, but my pioint is that what you write on a forum is not immune from the law and you can't just go hurling baseless accusations around thinking you are safe.

Something a few on here would do well to remember.

No, but the US court action serves a nice reminder to those of us who already get it and eye opener to those who think what they do on the net is above the law.

At least the Merkins are following the law

Our plod has spent the last ten months eating doughnuts before trying to avoid due process and having a tantrum when Google ask them to follow the rules - see Google battles Derby cops over access to Street View data
