Question Anyone allegic to MSG's

and if so what symptoms have you had. I believe i am allergic having had a non- blanching rash come up on my arms and legs along with some other symptoms which fit an MSG type of reaction.

This has been going on for some 3-4 weeks and after some thought about what and why it has happening, coincides with eating a take-away Chinese meal each and every time.

My wide is allergic to a whole host of things including MSG. Her main symptom is coughing / being slimed up.

Don't know if it's an allergy, but when I eat stuff with more than a smidgin of msg, my heart races, I get breathless and I'm thirsty enough to drink a litre of water during a night.

Sounds like too much salt.

It is difficult to know what level, but you can ask if it contains MSG. The answer (in Chinese restaurants) is a resounding 'yes' usually. Even the vegetables in sauce unless you ask specifically for it to be made without MSG (which means a different sauce).

Well dont eat from the chinky for a month and then try it again and see what happens. If you get symptoms again you know its from the MSG as they do use loads of the stuff.

Nope, salt has little or no effect on me, it's msg, I get it when I eat Chinese takeaway and anything that has msg listed in the ingredients.

See if you can find a copy of the Beeb's E Numbers: An edible adventure episode 1 - Colours. Amongst other things there's an interesting bit about MSG

Exclamation **** me - makes disturing reading

http://www.msgtruth.org/avoid.htm

I think i will book into the doctors to get tested to confirm (or not) that i have an allergy to MSG.

Fortunately i like cooking and prepare most of our food pretty much from scratch (ad time permitting) however, the above link lists stuff i would use like bullion/stock and i love Doritos and the odd takeaway here and there - bugger!

also - In Europe - MSG = E621, but avoid E620-625 as they also contain glutamate

Try Here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monosodium_glutamate for an explaination as to what MSG is

Most if not all people ingest it in food not inject it, snort it or smoke it (having bought it from a bloke wearing a hoodie in a rough part of town) so i am not too sure what relevance your comment has that's all. Please enlighten me

Honestly MSG and other drugs ( additives ) i don't like, plus drug dealers are people who do the wrong things that i never respect.

A gut i work with is convinced he's allergic to MSG but the quacks can't put their finger on what his problem is?

He gets swollen joints (ankles and knees) and can't move, waking up in agony. someone in work suggested that he had gout though as he spends most evenings in the pub and he said that its not. Doc has tested him for it apparently.

He spends a lot of time in thailand and nevers suffers with it when he goes there. He said that MSG is only added by chinese restaurants/ takeaways in Britain/ europe to accomodate our taste buds......

He's changed his diet now and cut it out and very rarely suffers with it now. He now buys food from chinese supermarkets and prepares it himself

After last nights very large consumption of a Chinese takeaway, I can confirm I have no allergy to MSG.

The headache I had this morning MUST have been from the red wine.

Red face

Well having spent most of this week in hospital feeling very poorly - had various tests including an MRI of my head it seems it is not MSG and doc/consultant/cardiologist now agree and believe it is Amiodarone Toxicity which can be fatal if not picked up. The doc has stopped me taking Amiodarone which seems like a good move although it takes several weeks to get it out of my system. In the mean time i should continue to feel like ****e.
Now baring in mind i have been admitted to hospital 15+ times since July as an 'emergency' and i started taking the drug in May someone could have put 2 and 2 together and come up with 4. i have had pretty much all the side effects listed..

Chinese takeaway here i come!

MSG is naturally occuring in all meat. In most variations of glutamic acid are.

If you are genuinely allergic to MSG then you would not be able to eat meat.

Thank you. Back in August i finished my Swimming Teaching course and qualified as an instructor (used to swim at national and sometimes international level when i was a lad) - i was in the pool most days. currently i cannot stand without dizziness and even falling and other problems - it sucks big time but onwards and upwards at least they know why and an op in several weeks time will fix my heart for good and back to normal life again!
