Default Scrapping Performance Indicators - NHS

Government announce that these ridiculous labour performance indicators (which were useless and never worked) are going to be scrapped.....

To be replaced with......

Performance measures !!!!!

“Are these not the same” the interview asked.....

“No, no, no..... totally different based on a number of key performance issues and not just one indicator of performance”

Remove the “Stone of Shame” – attach the “Stone of Victory” :

I understood it takes into consideration the quality of care and has scrapped some targets which where pointless.

I have been in and out of hospital about 30 times in the last 20 months - sometimes admitted for a period of days. I have been on the same wards time and time again and seen such differing levels of care and quality of care from very good to very bad and i do mean bad - dirty, lack of care, lack of giving a ****e, lack of leadership some people working very hard whilst others sat at the nurses station eating and drinking ans chatting ignoring anyone and anything.

I presume that a "performance indicator" is the same sort of thing or similar to a "target".

I believe that target led requirements are used by those who are incompetent when it comes to running a workforce.

Nice and convenient for them-they only have to see the listed targets and if achieved they are able to say to the next level that all is well and so on.

What that does is to concentrate a worker's attention on achieving a set target, or giving the impression that he has but detracting his attention from doing the actual job to best effect. The true efficiency and effectiveness of the organisation will be decreased.

This was the idea of NL as much as anything and is an indication why so much is wrong with a large amount of the work force.

I think Felix that if that style of running your organisation was removed, then the police forces would head back to the way they used to serve the public, allowing you to use your intelligence for once as we remember in past times.

They wont get rid of them as it would render a whole swathe of trust managers and their acolytes redundant and they couldnt have that, imagine the ammount of Powerpoint presentations and Excel graphs that would go to waste !

KPIs work OK if there aren't many of them & they stay simple ... most companies (incl the Govt) make them too numerous & complicated which defeats their purpose.

Can't be that hard - what are the important things that the NHS does

Targets improved the NHS beyond all recognition, just look at Cancer care the time from seeing your GP to seeing a specialist dropped dramatically most of the problems were where the staff tried to beat the targets rather than using them as a guide to what their jobs required.

If you dont monitor service delivery then state bodies like the NHS dont deliver anything just spend the money
