Default Camcorder advice

Want to buy one for my partner for xmas.

Have up £200 may stretch to £250 if its worth it.

Must work well in low light.

Any recommendations?

Unfortunatley you will struggle to get any camcorder under £300 that will do "well" in low light.
It is the particular achilles heel of digital camcorders in general apart from extremely high end (ie expensive) ones.

They all have Low light settings but dont be fooled by this as all they do is slow the frame rate (jerky motion) or up the iso rating so high all you get is a very grainy hard to see picture.

You Will have to compromise some where.

If its any help i went for a sanyo xacti waterproof so i can sail ski and swim with it i dont particularly care about its poor low light performance or its stills so it suits me perfectly
best of luck.

Forget WHAT part?

The cost or the low-light ability - Please be clear

I bought my wife a Kodak Playsport HD a few weeks back- £96 from Amazon. Just about the same size as a mobile phone, waterproof to 3M, full 1080P HD or 720 @60fps or 720 @30fps uses SD cards, easy transferal of footage. I'd have to say I'd be suprised if you can find better for the money.
My wife has it in her bag to take candid stuff of our 18 month little boy. It is spot on for the job. Search youtube for footage of peoples vids.

Well pleased with ours.
