Cool Waterproofing a down filled jacket

I can't remember whether my down filled winter jacket is water proof, or just shower proof.

I'm off to three days of watching the Roger Albert Clark this weekend, and the forecast is jolly cold an wet, so that's the one I am likely to take as my waterproof coat requires me to wear too many layers when it's brass monkeys.

I was just about to get some silicon water proofing spray when the woman in the shop asked me what the lining was and then said that a silicon spray would ruin it, but unfortunately they didn't stock stuff that would be ok.

Anyone know what is best used to waterproof the outside of a down filled jacket that won't go though the material and knacker the filling?

Maybe the wax that they use on those wax jackets might do it. Try it on a place that do not show first.

Cool

Nope, it's not a waxed jacket, just a normal outer shell with down filling.

Granger's do a range of waterproofing products. Have used on fleeces and soft shells before but never on a down jacket. Obviously if it does get wet you're knackered (or very wet & cold anyway!)

Cheers, Mark

I've used this stuff to help on an older jacket.
Not sure if it will waterproof it though, but it does say it can be used on down filled jackets

Cool

Well, lo and behold, I was looking through a cupboard for something unrelated, and at the back I found a dual pack of Nikwax Down Wash & Down Proof!

I remember them giving it to me when I bought the coat a few years ago now.

Thanks for all the replies though.

You can apply the wax for wax jackets to most materials to make them resist water.
