I had a Road Angel Plus which certainly did the job. One of the things I liked about it was that it was powered by a rechargeable battery which lasted 8 hours so there were no trailing wires in the car when I was using it. (It had a cable for longer journeys).
It was recently destroyed by accident and I found that it has been discontinued so I searched for a replacement which was also powered by a rechargeable battery and the only one I found was the Novus Rider. I've only just ordered it so can't tell you anything about its accuracy, however it costs about £90 and there is no charge for keeping the database up to date.

I think that most people use sat navs that have the fixed camera points and i think the radar detectors never really lived up to their claims

As Above....Most sat Navs have speed trap locations in them these days that can be updated...jus use that if your in an area that you dont know. I think your much more likely to get pulled over by an unmarked car these days tbh, worth just being on alert all the time and sensible about when your gonna put your foot down.

For fixed location speed cameras, ie Gatso, you cannot beat GPS detectors such as the Road Angel or some Sat Nav systems.
Radar is not really used any more in this country as a mobile speed detection device, however Gatso cameras still use radar to calculate your speed as you go past. But if you go across the pond into Europe or even Ireland, you will still find Radar being used with mobile speed traps.
Problem with radar detectors is that the radar band used by the radar speed traps is the same/similar radar as used by automatic doors etc. So you will get many false alerts which defeats the object of owning one.
Some good radar detectors will detect Gatso's well ahead, also handy to know if the Gatso is actually loaded up and working. A lot of Gatso's where I live are not on, they swap and change between them every few weeks.
But if you want complete protection then you will need a good GPS based warning system such as a Road Angel.
Then you will need a laser jammer, diffuser, blinder, what ever you want to call it. But be warned, if you get caught using one and its proven that it has been installed to jam laser, you WILL be banned.
Forget laser detectors, they are different from jammers and simply detect the laser, by then its too late, laser or LIDAR as it properly known will take a few milliseconds to get your speed.
There is one other option, dont speed, lol
