The last Max Power - January 2011
I forgot to post this up on Friday, but Max Power will be producing its last copy in January after nearly 18 years, the circulation has gone from 240,000 copies a month at its peak to 20,000 now.
I know I haven't bought a copy for years, but I used to love the early days as a teenager, Bill Thomas, Emma Bradshaw, Hans were very good writers, I still have the first issue with the purple Dimma 205 on the cover.

Anybody remember Revs, that was published by EMAP as well?

I did used to read it. I recall some of the project cars, the carlton GSI, pink Escort Cosworth, purple BMW, and no doubt others. One car that vividly sticks in my mind is an offensively bright R5 Turbo.

More and more mags will disappear, especially those with a young demographic as printed media goes digital onto iPads, iPhones etc. I've worked in the print trade for 25 years and the sudden shift with the advent of smaller, more portable devices is alarming. As long as the publishers realise that the cost should be relative, considering there is no longer need for huge premises containing £10m printing presses, their associated overpaid staff (not me ), extortionately priced consumables, and enormous shipping and distribution costs. The Times tried robbing people of £2 a day to read online and lost +90% of its internet readership. Advertisers should be plentiful too, as the audience is just a click away and the ads can be active and eye-catching, and this could further decrease the production costs. If I'm still w*rking at a Mac in 2 years time I will be very surprised

It just went really tacky, it was like the daily sport of car magazines, just **** in there (and the odd lass with her bits out), but the cars were not that good in the later editions, there are better car mags, I prefer the Evo type mag now, a better show of standard cars or some of the more "Marque specific" ones.

It's how many of the 'lads mags' have gone. I still handle Loaded, but it's just like a thicker Nuts or Zoo these days, with no intelligent journalism whatsoever. There used to be a balance of reviews (cars, gadgets etc), features (travel, science, social etc), interviews and a little eye-candy. Most mags aimed at men these days seem to be vapid, puerile drivel smattered with crass stupidity and more **** than the Houses of Parliament. Not everyone is a lager-swilling baseball cap/tracksuit wearing retard. a point lost in these publications

Personally I grew out of that stuff in the late 90's when I finished university and lad culture became a bit of a bore to me.
Lad culture was just a fad basically, although it was kind of fun.

Back in my late school and college days I used to buy Max Power every month. Being a testosterone fuelled pizza face, I appreciated the usual array of possibly attainable 'cruize skanks'
Grew out of the whole bodykit, lexus light thing at 18 and preferred mags more akin to Evo or Topgear thereafter.
Max Power did go through a period of 'growing up' with less lairy cars, more mature articles and literally no nipples But it didn't last long and they have gone even more deeper into the chav scum divide from reality. Before there didn't seem to be a big gap as TDW said it was a 90s fad. But now it's very much us and them with regards to normality and the kind of person expected to read Max Power and the like. Shame they couldn't move with the times as it's seen to be derogatory to read such magazines now, not so much back then.

I think your right. There was a thread on Pistonheads a couple of months ago now discussing how the layout of Evo had changed due to the 'Max Power' influence. The format of Evo did appear quite different for one issue.

i think the main problem with max power and mags alike is that they are full to the hilt of fecking adverts!!! my mates in hospital at minute and bought himself a copy of top gear and said its the WORST EVER mag he has bought with 1 article worth reading the rest was adverts!!!! max power became bad for this as time went on which stoped me buying it.who wants to pay £5 for a book full of adverts.

Personally I was never in to it, in fact I was never into cars until I moved to Australia where young hoons and modders have serious V8 muscle or jap turbos - much more sexy than the traditional British 'boy racers' driving a 1.6 four-banger with a fart can, and a day-glow green paint job.
At least that was my impression of Max Power and the cruise scene of the 90's.

i used to read them all before i could drive, max power, revs, fast car, the old style redline and loved the bodykits and lexus lights. i then saw the light when i passed my test and haven't touched them since apart from redline as its more grown up nowadays and is a great read.

Had the odd good article or cover car, A friend of mines car made font
cover once, and it was handy when i pranged the her indoors car, and we
needed to find some cheap alloys .
How many tuned novas or saxo's can you cover before it becomes boring lol

i posted on the thread about the utter 5hitness of a piece on a world record car jump (or ken block jump, i forget now) it was a right jumble of graphics and looked crap.
there's about 3 or 4 ex max power guys at Evo now, it's calming down but there was a whiff of 'max power' about nicks first couple of months under his charge. nothing wrong with a bit of change, but Evo's great as it is, don't **** about with it.

End of an era.
I had one of my old creations on display at one of the shows when I was 17 although it was the 'outside boy's
I have always tended to style my cars as modified but still 'factory type' looking.
I lost interest when the crazy huge bodykit stuff came out, I much preferred it when it was blokes building cars, not some cheque book warrior.

Its quite sad that its come to an end, although in the last 6 or 7 years it did become more about the size of **** and over the top bodykits rather than good cars. It was no longer about guys who could mod their own car in their Garage, but instead silly spotty little fukcers, who would hand over a credit card to the likes of Peugot Ecosse and ask them to do the job for them.
At one time there were actually some really good features and really nice, clean looking cars.
