Stamps may rise by up to 5 pence
"Royal Mail is given permission to raise the cost of a first-class stamp by a record 5p to 46p next year.
Don't know about you lot, but my confidence in the postal system has never been lower

The price of stamps has been rising quietly and regularly since Bliar and Brown took over. Just another little stealth tax.
Now, the ConDems are desperate for money, so why not?
Personally I buy a book of 12 or 24 at a time so as to avoid the next price rise, and 12 stamps lasts me 6 months, if not more.
Except when my lad is out of work and needs to send CVs through the post

Vary rare I post anything anyway, but when I do, I don't think an extra 5p will really matter to me.
With email, facebook, etc the amount of actual mail being delivered each day must be down from say 10 years ago.
The posty still has to collect it from the post box. Take it to the sorting office. Sort it. Put it on a lorry. Drive it to a sorting office. Sort it. Give it to the Posty to deliver to your required destination.
All the above requires staff, vehicles, fuel, etc to do that. The amount of mails is down, so revenue is down, yet wages, fuel, etc are all up.
Not bad for 46p.

How come the post never arrives first thing in the morning nowadays??
drives me crackers....you used to be able to rely on the cheerie postie to drop your mail off say seven in the morning.
Now its maybe 12 noon,or 3pm or something obscure.
We seem to have gone backwards with RM,not more efficient and I have no idea why.Thought they would like to show the competition how good they are
(sorry but its something that really gets my goat )

it might only be 46p and granted you can't drive to scotland to deliver a card for that little, but they deliver millions of items. what if it costs them 3p to deliver your letter to scotland. you still agree with 46p when they make so much money and first class isn't necessarily next day. it's not 100% your mail item will arrive at all.
3p delivery cost is a silly extreme example, but there's a line beyond which they're treating us like suckers.
Apparently the postal 'company' is being fattened up to sell on.

Royal Mail will decide next month whether to implement a rise of that magnitude. It currently loses 6.4p for each stamped letter it delivers.
Rivals such as UK Mail collect and sort letters themselves, but have to pay Royal Mail to deliver over what is known as "the final mile" - up to people's letterboxes.
Royal Mail says current rules have meant it loses 2.5p on each item delivered in this way.
