Default Bumper pay-day for Somali pirates...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-11704306

Somali pirates are reported to have received a total of $12.3m (£7.6m) in ransom money to release two ships.
This might as well be an advert for piracy. People in other third world countries other than Somali will surely start taking up piracy as a career if it's paying off and making them mega rich.

Surely these tankers carrying tens of millions of pound of cargo will soon be carrying mercenaries? Not sure what the rules of engagement would be, but oil companies would surely be better off carrying teams of ex-military mercenaries than paying out ransoms that big.

It makes my blood boil that they still get away with it.

They know where their towns, harbours and bases are, perhaps they should send them these little ransoms.....

Utter stupidity paying up. Just funds their war machine so that they can take more ships with bigger and better kit.

I don't get it

About time there was a concerted effort to sort them out once and for all.

That British husband and wife have remained kidnapped for a year now. These politicians just hide behind the standard excuse and let it all happen.

There is a market for marine based mercenaries to protect the shipping in these waters either on board the tankers and or remotely from mtb's as no one else seems capable or ballsy enough to deal with them least of all the Royal Navy who is more likely to be captured or take the pirates to mainland UK as asylum seekers!

killing a few boatloads (the more the merrier) of the of Somali pirate scumbags would do the world a favour and sends out the right message to the pirates - find a new line of work or die!

The ships and cargo's are expensive and the crews deserve to be protected so the cost should be a lot less than paying ransoms and loosing ships cargo and crews!

Not ******* rocket science!

The French tuna fleet is protected by 60 marines spread over the 10 boats, seems the thing to do... don't **** about, if the pirates approach - sink them.

I still am amazed that the Royal Navy gave the excuse for not saving the British husband and wife from kidnap was that they were frightened of injuring a pirate!

It was quoted as an official reply to criticism of their lack of action. Apparently they were watching the kidnap going on!

On the other hand;

If western multi-nationals hadn't spent the last several decades bribing and pillaging their way through everything of worth from that coast of Africa, leaving mainly barren, polluted wastelands behind them, then maybe some of those that have turned to piracy would actually be able to provide for their families in a legitimate manner

You forgot the countless civil wars, they seem pretty good at screwing their country up themselves.

Agreed, many of these countries were much better off under colonial rule, and many would now even admit as much.

Tribal instincts are deep rooted in these people, and they just dont seem to be able to run a country without massive corruption and violence.

And the fact that given half a chance some Despot sets himself up and has all the aid turned into Mercs and huge Palaces whilst his countrymen starve.
