That was unexpected to say the least! Even his second to last lap would have put him pole - quality bit of driving!
Great to see the Williams team back at the front too. Even if he gets into the first corner first tomorrow I can't see him hanging onto the lead for long tho - but should make for an exciting race!

A car with exactly the right set up for the conditions and the tyres and driver with a great feel for the amount of grip = a pole position from nowhere. Great for F1. Patrick Head is till one mif my favourite people in F1. Old skool

It really is pretty unbelievable though.
He's done not too bad over the season, but to be so far ahead of the pack is properly amazing. Makes the others look slow almost.

Not taking anything away from him, but the track was drying rapidly and he managed to go out just ahead of the main coentenders so he crossed the line with 4 seconds to spare and got an 'extra' lap over the others which is why he was so far ahead even if his previous lap was still good enough for pole by .2 secs..

Not the first time the Williams car has gone fast on a green track. It seems to work well in those conditions.
Fair play though, always nice to see a different name at the front of the grid.

I think he meant that they would do it deliberately to maintain the lead and brake away for their moment of glory before suddenly spluttering to a stop.

I think his pole was down to a combination of things - perfect timing on track, maybe a setup which just worked out ideal for those conditions (drying track), and thirdly driver ability - he kept it together, no mistakes, and got the result. Hulk hasn't really impressed in F1 up to now, but he was excellent in lower forumule.
Would be surprised if he finished any higher than 5th tomorrow, but still it should be a good race!

Yeah, shame about Alonso.... shame he wasn't dead last!!!

Great lap - nothing to lose though - just hang it out and if you fall off who cares. Webber and Vettel etal were trying not to make mistakes and were only driving at 9.10ths. Good result for Alonso given the conditions I reckon.

As mentioned above, not taking anything away from Williams but Id hazard a guess that they have split their setup and have set up Hulks car for a dry race and the others are edging their bets towards a wet race as it has given out rain for the race, so he was on the right tyres and setup at the right time,
If its wet tomorrow they will pass him as his car will be far too hard in the damp.

I think Alonso summed it up - Slicks on a wet track with a dry line. You go 10 cm off the line and you lose a second. The contenders are all sh1tting bricks and can't afford to push the limits. Hulkenberg could afford to chuck in a banzai lap or two - worst case scenario was that he binned it and started in 10th.
Tomorrow will be good. If Hulk gets through the esses first (and Webber doesn't crash into someone in front of him... like he usually does), the RB's will be sitting ducks up the hill in sector 3

Well I am prepared to give him and Williams all the credit for doing it. He didn't just do one lap like that too.
I was wondering why he was so hard to pass in the Codemasters F1 2010 game on my PC!

In fact, vettel is the ONLY driver in the running I don't want to win, but that's only because I have money on alonso to win.
As for Legard, the man is an idiot and needs to stop talking.

Put a tenner on at 7-1
Stuck the bet on at the start of the season, I have a man on the inside who successfully predicted the 2009 result during pre season testing. Rather stupidly, I didn't put money on his say so. So I decided to bet on his say so this year.
