Hi All

Ok I have gone and got myself a Corn snake. My 8yr old has had one since May and I really enjoy it and the time spent with the kids with it. So over the weekend I bought 2 Vivs of a guy and his 2 yr old male corn. I have set them up etc and settled them in and even given their first feed, and all is good.

Now i am starting to think about breeding and wanted to know what sort of colours I would get. I have read on the web about the morphs and colours etc but it goes straight over my head.
Does anyone know of a dummies guide anywhere ???

Also does anyone put UV lights in their Vivs ? I know it has no benefit for the corn but just for lighting. If you do what units do you use. I dont really want to be drilling massive holes in the vivs for the light unit, if you know what i mean.

I always wanted a snake as a kid, but always thought, it won't do much and it would be boring. But when may 8yr old asked for one for his birthday I jumped at the chance

Now i find it fascinating to watch, and my kids love holding them and learning about them. I actually find it quite relaxing holding the snake as well just wish the missus did a bit more .........

That was my biggest concern. What if they bit one of the kids. So far so good, they seem to love being and handled. And I have been told corns are normally very placid if handle correctly and regularly.

It would be a lot less of a mess than if a dog bit them on the nose I suppose

Make sure your snake room (if you have one) is sealed and has little for them to hide in. Corn Snakes are escape artists! They can also look after themselves and I have known then escape - be lost for months - and then turn up again in the back garden or next doors garden. They dont go *that* far - but they will eat anything small and rodent like!

My next door neighbour had two corn snakes. He had a huge viv in his shed/porta cabin. The one got out and found it's way into my childrens playhouse!

My daughter wasn't bothered, but it terrified my son. I don't suppose the snake took kindly to being manhandled into a tesco bag my myself either!

Soon after, he traded them in for some bearded dragons. He said he was bored of the snakes.
About 6 months later he sold the dragons too.

I like snakes, don't get me wrong, but they were boring.

I can see how they could become boring. But at the moment there is so much to find out about i find it interesting. Plus with the setting up of the new vivs has been interesting and I suppose it will be a matter of trying to keep it good fun and interesting. I still love watch loving them eat and this is done regularly so hopefully I won't get bored and nor will the kids )

I would love to breed them and find out about that. But I worry about what to do with the hatchlings etc.....

Had many reptiles myself, lizards and snakes.

Started with lizards then moved to snakes, only to move back to lizard ownership again.
As far as people saying they're boring. are'nt all pets boring when they're not doing what you want. Boring? not when it's feeding time!
