Default A life long obsession with mechanical things things that sound brutaly powerfull

Dont often post in here but I was wondering today -

Has anyone else been drawn from a young age to things that sound mechanicaly raw and powerfull?

It seems to be something you are tuned into and becomes part of you or you are stone cold dead to it.

It started with me as an obsession with these. As a very young lad I would get up in the pitch black in Kent sneak out the house and go and find one of these to look at as well as take the numbers. I loved breaking into/bunking into rail depots all over the country circa 1979 at the age of 13 and sitting in the cabs pretending I was driving lol

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBkQQ...eature=related

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2Lgp...eature=related

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5rWTRDrenU

We stopped making beasts like this and scrapped them all...now we have japenese built tubrocharged bacon slicers humming about.

So I totally lost interest in all that and in my 20s moved on to
Spitfires and Hurricanes, especialy Merlin engined ones. I ended up doing Battle of Britain research, you will see my mates doing the digs on time team and those preserved ones you see flying about I will probably know some one involved in it ect ect blah blah blah

I mean what a noise...its just ****ing brilliant, I never get tired of it

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2nlG...eature=related

Then they stopped flying at crowdlines and the private airshow I used to go to where a handfull of us turned up and they were flown out of a field and thrown about stopped.

So then in my 30s and now into my 40s
I got into ...you guessed it subarus. TVRs the whole V8 thing sounds great, an R8 or an AMG on the autobahn sounds great, but for me the subaru noise has the edge. For me it is one of the main reasons for owning the car. Tonight I thrashed my 460hp stripped out classic to within an inch of its life, bangs and flames out the back, it sounded brilliant.

OK ignore the man talking gibberish. Ignore the fact he is driving too fast in a built up area.
Listen to the engine note - superb

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEcwDtySEFQ

People own cars for different reasons. Any one else relate to where I am coming from and can trace a similar fixation backwards with mechanical beasts way before subaru ownership

+1 - there are some motors I could listen to the sound of all day. For me the Impreza in one of the most distinctive sounding motors on the road.

That Alpha sounds good.

Vulcan. I always remember years back very close to Weston Super Mare one came over at low level and then kind of did a 90 degree low level turn almost over my car. The sound was indescribable. I parked up and watched it.

I think the emotions the Chinook sound evokes adds to the sound; resupply, evac, etc. for the guys on the ground.

It has done a few low passes at Brize Norton, and it just dares you to stand and watch, hands away from your ears. Imagine how that would have sounded 20,000 feet over Buenos Aires.

Oddly seeing it lift off the air gives me goosebumps, it just amazes me completely!

When I was 12/13 I got a lift in one when I attended an army summer camp thing for a week. We only got to go straight up and back down but still the noise was outstanding.

Interesting thread, a few weeks ago I found out the manager of the company I work for likes to listen to the sound of engines when he’s stressed. He’s got sound clips on his computer in his office

What about the sound of these - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0g7o-ecf7UE

I was parked up once in my classic with the engine idling, waiting as ever for Mrs Leslie!

When I switched off after a while, two elderly ladies came up to me and asked me to start it up again because they enjoyed standing there and listening to it!

I had something similar happen the other week. I had overtaken an elderly gentlemen on the way to pick my son up, when I parked up I saw this elderly gent walking up to my car so I expected the inevitable moan. Instead he commented on the sound of my car as I went past him and went on to list a load of cars that he had owned in his petrol head days. Although I did have to google "morgan" and "sunbeam" as I have never heard of those makes.

I remember the second rally I ever went to, I'd latched on to two guys who seemed to know where to go! I could hear a car waaaaay off in the distance, one guy looked at the other, '6R4!' Sure enough, a 6R4 appeared shortly after! It's a skill I've now acquired!

On the day of the last flights one flew pretty low over my dads house as we were out in the garden and the noise was just incredible! The pilot lived not far from us in Scotland and flew over his house on his way to edinburgh!

most group B rally cars, metro 6r4 ,lancia intergrale, audi quattro, rs200, they all made lovely, whizz, bang grunting sounds, they sounded wonderfully alive, especially on a cold dark morning in the woods in november

They still make Morgans now-handbuilt too. The Sunbeam were good old cars in their day.

What a shame the Tin Triangle is not allowed to use all the power any more. The straight and level flypasts it is restricted to now are an insult to its true capabilities, especially stopping the climb on a full blooded wingover by turning it upside down and pulling the nose down. Not difficult to do but it certainly looked impressive.
I seem to remember that a Vulcan was delivered to Kirmington(E Midlands Airport) when they were being scrapped, and that there were plans to get it flying at displays in the same way as 558.

Leslie, Kirmington is "Humberside Airport" just south of the river...

I haven't been for years, since the airshows stopped.
