Trouble at the mill Vulcan 558
Just had an email from the vulcan peeps,
Seems there are huge plans afoot to either see the end of the Vulcan flying
in the UK, or ship it abroad to another country where it has funding to
remain flying.
There is a public poll on the matter, but i cant get the link to work: grrr
Its a tough call, fly her to a uk museum, and ground her for life,
Or fly her abroad, and let her remain flying funded by another country.
or you can donate etc...
What i cant understand is its meant to be run by professionals as a
charitable trust, but every year there coming out with the same issues
regarding funding.
Isnt it time it was run as a business, with some hard marketing and clear
guidance and info to its venture.
Personally, as hard as it is, id rather it went abroad and remained flying
than mothballed in some poxy museum
Mart

As much as its nice to see a plane like the Vulcan fly, it doesn't really have a purpose anymore and its not as if planes are cheap to run/maintain. It has had its day, maybe a museum is the best place for it.

I kinda agree with both sides, it would be a shame to see it grounded but at least in a museum it could be viewed and appreciated by everyone, not just those lucky enough to be at an Air show.
I've read a few stories from people who have been to Air shows expecting the Vulcan to be there - even it being billed as the main attraction then finding out at the show it's not available or it just doesn't turn up - This can't be good.
That said, it is the last of it's kind - a true engineering and patriotic legend that fulfilled it's duty and for the amount of work that has gone into it to restore it and keep it flying, it would be sad to see it grounded for the rest of it's life.

I was lucky enough to see it fly again at fairford airshow last year, and what an awesome thing it is! be such a shame for it to be grounded again but as said, it cant be cheap to maintain/fly and it cant keep on going forever on charitable funding

Keep it flying
It just has to be kept flying, at any point in the future it can be in a museum, but for gods sake keep it flying for as long as possible. Once its grounded, that will be it, forever

Although I applaud their efforts, I can't help thinking that if the people in charge of the 558 project were a bit (OK a lot) more professional, and a lot less parochial, about the whole enterprise, they wouldn't keep encontering this problem

Museum is the place for it now, beautiful plane to see in the sky - but times are tough, luxuries must be earned.
How much does it cost each year to keep flying?

It is an icon and it was a very large part of all the defence systems in the Cold War which were instrumental in preventing a nuclear war, which would have been the end of it all!
On top of that, it is a remarkable aircraft to fly, its handling abilities for such a large machine are quite astounding.
It was the only aircraft which could have succeeded in the longest ever armed bombing raid and denying the runway to the Argentinians for use by their fighters. That effectively made it possible to win that war.
It is a most attractive aircraft to see flying and all who see it flying are impressed.
It would be a great shame to see it stop flying, especially after all that work for such a long time to get it back in the air.
Like the Lancaster and the Spitfire and the Hurricane, it has a significant place in our history and people deserve the chance to see it flying. That is by far the best way to appreciate all those aircraft.
There are Vulcans on view at some airfields, but it is not the same seeing it sitting on the ground.
Yes I have of course!

Write to your heroes, the Tories, ... there are 20 millionaires in the Tory Cabinet - I'm sure that they will move some of their cash from offshore to the coffers of the Vulcan Appreciation Society.

If they do, sadly ground it, before they do I think a 3d IMAX, Dolby Stereo documentary and footage should be recorded for posterity to try and preserve some of the experience for posterity.

It does sound like it's going to need a lot of ongoing funding to keep this aircraft flying.
IMO shipping(flying?) it to another country - likely the States, would be a good move. They'd love it at airshows, just as it's been the star attraction at UK airshows over the last few years.
Once it's been in the states for a few years, ship it back to the UK where people will be all the more eager to see it fly again after a few years without, and funding should come easier.
Would be a real shame to have it grounded as it's a truely awesome sight/sound seeing this plane in action.

If of course these chaps did agree to support for 558, would you, as a very rich man as you tell us so often, be prepared to also hand a few thousands across into their kitty?

To be honest, Les, I would rather give to the NSPCC ... a child pulled away from an abusive family and helped to fly high is more of a priority to me than helping an ageing bomber fly again.

I can understand that of course, ageing items, including people of course are of little value in comparison old chap!
Mind you, it was instrumental in providing you with a good living!

Wouldn't it be nice if whoever just won £113m on the Euromillions donated a bit to the Vulcan effort? I know I'd keep it ariborne for a year or two if I was in that position.
