Default Just got an Amazon Kindle

Using the web browser on it to post this, have to say I am pretty impressed so far.
seamless setup as it comes set up to the Amazon account you bought it from and I was
reading a book bought via three g within minutes.

well worth a look for those who read !

Am I right in thinking that web browsing is free, the 3g 'bill' having been paid by Amazon?

I got the wi-fi only one. I couldn't see why you would want to pay £50 extra for 3G.

The huge amount of free books available online make it a must buy, the text is very easy on the eye and 1 charge has lasted me a month so far

So for the benefit of a technophobe what is the difference between the two models in use.

One allows you to use the mobile network to download files( AND Wi-Fi), the other requires Wi-Fi (they both can use the supplied USB lead as well)

Basically one needs a wireless network or physical wire, the other can use the phone data network

The 3G one allows wifi and mobile network connection. The wifi one is wifi only, home or public broadband connection.

Still want to get one for mum Are they off back order now? Maybe now is the time.

Mine turned up in a couple of days - I'd already ordered 1/2 a dozen books for it before it even got to me

Configured to use the work's wi-fi and the books within seconds

Both my wife and I got one - had them for a month now and adore them - we both read and collect tons of books and weren't sure about the move to digital but won't be going back. Quality of the screen is astounding.

I like the Kindle Les, great for the more serious reader. For the odd bit of reading a device that can do more would be a better choice, I always have a book on the go on my iPhone, it's surprisingly easy on the eye, and very handy always having something to read in my pocket.

I have a 3G one and love it - terrific when travelling (daily commute) and the 3G is great if, like me, you want to be able to spontaneously buy books on holiday etc. e.g. at Manchester airport recently I saw a book in Smiths that I fancied - but instead of paying them £4.99 and I bought it from amazon for £2.60 while having a coffee and started reading then and there. Great piece of kit and a bargain for what it is.

I've always dismissed the kindle as a 1 trick pony............I thought the wi-fi was for downloading books only and not for browsing !

Is the browser something like google chrome ??

Might get one

Had a play with one of these last week and I was very impressed. The screen is very cleverly designed to make the text easy to read in different lights. For the money they are rather good.

Yes I was joking of course!

It sounds like a good piece of kit for the job anyway.

I wouldnt buy it for the browser, it works but given the refresh rate of the screen and the fact it is black and white it isnt exactly massive fun but it is good enough when you just want a quick surf, with the added advantage it is available for free via the Whispernet.

i think the E reader is going to take off big style, the Kindle is the best at the moment, I know you can do it on Ipodpadtouch whatever but on those you are always waiting for the battery to run out and thinking you could be looking at something more flashy, with the Kindle it makes you concentrate on the reading.

So the prepaid connectivity of the 3G version CAN be used abroad definatly? I was not sure about that bit, but if it is, that's a plus.

Will have to get one when i get back from hols in a couple of weeks, then mum can take it to her sisters to see if she does want one after all lol.

Ok, that is quite true, you cant get Meg and Mog or the Gruffalo on it so it may be a bit highbrow, that said you can get internet on it so, yes you can look at ****, but its like looking at a really vintage copy of Razzle in black and white.

I believe it work all round the world, will give it a try as going to Boston via Dublin in the morning.

I am always concerned that the book selection wouldnt cover the sort of things i already buy from Amazon.

can you back the books up onto your PC so when the kindle dies you dont lose the books?

I'm pretty sure I read that the books are attached to the account, so indeed if the kindle dies you can redownload them.
