Default Do we care whether Apple/Google/etc is open/closed?

After Any Rubin's tweet,
the definition of open: “mkdir android ; cd android ; repo init -u git://android.git.kernel.org/platform/manifest.git ; repo sync ; make"

Do we really care that you can download and compile Android? Or that you can't download and compile iOS4?

I pretty much think it's moot.

A small part of me is miffed how everything multiplexes through iTunes, but the larger part of me is pleased I only have one app store to choose from and, to get music, books and videos into my phone, I just have to drag them into itunes and sync. That's pretty attractive. Even more attractive to just hop into the AppStore/iTunes app and buy stuff.

my manager swears by android and seems to completely gloss over having to visit multiple market places and forgets the stress when there is a new version of android, but his HTC sense ui prevents him from upgrading. but wait, he can 'root' his phone and upgrade that way.

That's a bit rubbish if you ask me.

He uses linux too

I guess the question is, what are you so desperate to do that apple's "closed" system is preventing you from doing? I've looked at the cydia store - wireless syncing is pretty cool. the rest? meh.

'Having' to visit multiple market places?

Isn't that called choice?

Facebook applications are far more open than Android, and look at what a cess pit that place is.

You know what they say about storing all your eggs in one basket!

I dont want one app to manage everything, i want freedom of choice.

On the one hand I like the way the ipod touch works, On the other i

hate the way its so frustrating, things that you take for granted, are

disabled, or restricted.

Hence people root

Im going android this time round, came sooooo close to ios4 but couldnt

live with the restrictions.

the ability to truly personalise your phone - not a MAJOR winner, but a nice useful tool.....

call it "mobile modding" - ironic on a car forum

In theory I don't really care. I never saw the issue with Windows. I am old enough to be working with PC's before Windows and that was a complete nightmare. It is brilliant that I can send a DOC or PPT and 99% of the world population can open it ...

With Apple, and specifically the iPhone, it is obviously even more closed in that I can't run whatever application I wish. That is occasionally annoying as there are some talented people out there that write great software that are not allowed in the AppStore (like MyWi). On the other hand, everything kind of works .... and that has to be a good thing.

99% if the features people mention are missing they'd never use nor miss.

Divx playback is possible on the iPhone.
You can download files from the web to the iPhone.
You can transfer files via Bluetooth.
Not sure what surfing the net without restrictions means.
Flash is not wanted nor missed.

So that leaves Flash, which quite frankly you can keep.

nope.

As long as it works and doesn't alienate or prevent/prevent the user from doing what they want.

every thread on apple/android/phones you state how bad your wife's galaxy S is yet even with you using an iphone 4 she has not sold her galaxy S and bought an iphone 4 (which would probably be quite a close swap in money terms).

Is your wife the unluckiest android user in the world? There must be a dozen different complaints about it on scoobynet on various threads, yet she still keeps it

I am happy with my widgets and added home screen stuff and don't suffer any noticeable battery drain on my desire or even my G1!

i've actually not tried to download a file on my phone or ipad

divx and xvid - won't they play with the VLC app?

As for bluetooth transfer, apple has opened up the APIs. My g/f is excited about using her pogo printer with her iphone 4, so we're waiting for that update.

The only thing i would beef up on my phone/ipad/anyone's phone! is a speedier/consistent data connection. we get spoit with wifi at home and then 3G is always so patchy out and about.

where are all these multiple market places i just use the market icon on my phone or if i want something a little funky go over to xda developers and download it directly.

i don't spend all my time going round all these "marketplaces" that your friend goes to although I would be interested in what they are?

my £600 ipad can't even receive push emails unless i open the email app and it was only launched a few months ago yet my antique g1 phone gets emails instantly.. why did apple not even offer you the option of turning on multi tasking years ago?

she is not tech savvy , she was complaining about her battery going quick so I turned the widgets off and she says it's better.

Her only complaint now is that it's running slow hopefully 2.2 will sort that out. She got the phone on a free upgrade at £35 a month . Find me a deal where you can get a iPhone free upgrade for £35.Shes not bothered about specs more if it looks good which in her eyes the galaxy is.

You know I was just thinking the same thing. If Apple products are so good why oh why do the Apple fanboys need to keep starting thread after thread discussing them and then using them as a vehicle to diss other manufacturer's products?

I'm an android user because i don't want to be told how to use my phone!

I can understand buying an iphone if you don't care or you don't mind being controlled, like a child.

i haven't been dissing android. i just have all apple stuff, so makes sense for me to be a fanboi Jack does the android trolling.

I'm also interested in the meteoric rise of apple/meester jobs too.

it also gauls me when people go on about the freedoms they're missing when, in point of fact, they only miss them because they're told to.

Nice to meet a customer

Just want to be able to surf the web today like I can on any normal PC/laptop.... is that too much to ask?

As for the whole HTML 5 thing yes it's the future, but HTML 5 is a set of standards not a replacement for Flash per se. You are not comparing like with like.
