Default Supermarket pricing, weird or what?

Just been in for a SMALL 100g jar of Carte Noire instant coffee for my lad at work. I noticed that it was only £1.99 whereas the 200g jars are £5.19.

So........£3.96 against £5.19, or a saving of £1.23 per 200g.

Unluckily, they only had 4 jars.

But here's the question.....WHY?

Surely it's more economical to move larger jars? And they take up less shelf space. So why sell for dearer?

Fruit and veg sometimes cheaper per kg pre-packed than loose items which you wouldn't expect though it changes every week.

It was the same with the beer last week in my local asda

It worked out cheaper to buy 4x 330ml bottles of beer, than it did to buy 2x 660ml ones

I noticed a box of Oxo Cubes in Tesco at £1 each, or 2 for £2 the other day. What a bargain the "offer" is, eh!

You are quite intolerant of people making such mistakes, aren't you..

There can be a few reasons why this sort of thing happens, and I'm sure at some points it could be done to catch people out, not that any retailer would admit to that. Rightly or wrongly, there is nothing to say one larger product has to be cheaper than two smaller as stupid as that may be.

Generally it can just be down to a mistake on the part of those responsible for pricing, also what can (and does) happen is that a product may be 'on offer' but due to bad planning the POS hasn't been sent to the stores. Therefore, you end up with a product being priced up (leading to such above situation) but with nothing to suggest an offer being in place.

Mistakes do happen in retail like any other field of business, but even if we want to assume the worst, all of the information is in front of us. If we are caught out, bad luck. As far as supermarkets go, the prices are there, better still the unit prices, so misleading or not they are not hiding info, as much as I feel Mr.Hutton is a little blunt, he's not wrong.

Maybe the combination of me working in retail, us not being too well off and the other half being quite on the ball too, we don't really get caught out in this way.

Possibly, but different retailers will be appealing to different customers. As far as I'm aware, Waitrose appeals to a 'higher standard' of customer. Now if they are adjusting their pricing, they are most likely doing so as times are tough and they don't want to lose existing customers, or they are tapping into a bigger market.

All retailers are out to make a healthy profit, some want more than others, but I suppose in tough times we notice that change more some places than others.

And what about Chavsda?

When WalMart took over, they announced that ALL Asda prices would be the same as in the USA within 6 months, which would lower UK prices in other supermarkets.

Anyone seen any evidence of them doing even ONE price, yet?

Liars, cheats and thieves.
