This.. http://www.wimp.com/trafficlights/

Though the results would depend on the junction and attitude of drivers I think.

Also the health of drivers i think.Needs be mandatory by law for all people on the road, using the whole variety of transport to have full health checks for fixing a health problem or more than one.Start using the NHS for what it was meant to be used for & remove the obsticles in hospitals so they can be used for it's real purpose. If D. Cameron & Cleggy do screw up the NHS, it's mandatory for those who mess up, to put it right again.

They only had a few robots ( traffic lights ) when we went to SA . FIrst gets to the white line has right of way - didnt see an accident

And were so polite here it would probably just speed traffic up here !

Very illuminationg. Just takes a bit of common sense and polite behaviour by the looks of it.

The 4-way stop junctions in the USA work very well too. Minimum of wasted time.

Ah, the Cabstand traffic lights in Portishead!

As I live in the town, I have personal experience of this junction, both before, with and after the traffic lights. Before the ligths the junction was dual carriageway with off-slips for the side junctions. It was ok, but with two massive housing developments going on, it wasn't going to cope with the increase in traffic.

Enter the traffic lights! A good idea, but because of the staggered cross roads style of the junction, only one set of lights was green at a time. This used to lead to massive queues in the High Street, and so parallel streets became rat-runs at peek times.

Last summer, after many complaints, the lights were turned off. This was supposed to be a trial for a few weeks, but was so successful, the lights remained off.

It works at the moment, because there are no markings, so everyone indicates and generally gives way to the right. Also, because of the 'temporary' nature of the road layout, everyone is cautious through the junctions.

It has been slightly spoilt by a humped zebra crossing at one end (the intention is that padestrians have right of way at all corners of the junction). The hump is unnecessary!

Eventually, circles are to be painted to create two mini roundabouts. I bet the whole lot goes to sh** again as soon as that happens, because no one has any idea how to indicate, give way or circumnavigate those!!

Don't you have to give way to traffic "already" on the roundabout ?

On my route to/from work we have a large roundabout that comes off a dual carriage way, the traffic was never that bad.

If i left work at 6.30pm i could join the roundabout, travel straight around and get back onto the dual carriage way with no fuss or traffic at all, same thing in the morning at 7.30am

A while back it was redeveloped, and now has all them horrible stop start traffic lights all around them, with a new 3 lane type thing.

You can guess how this ended up, leaving work now at 6.30pm and i have to que behind cars to get on the dual carriage way, same thing in a bloody morning.

Plus most people dont know what "lane" they are now supposed to be in, peoples indicators are all over the shop (only when they **** up), cutting up "lanes" and causing crashes.

*******.

Traffic lights are seen as the answer to all traffic problems but nothing could be further from the truth. Some of the placements in and around Reading are a complete joke. Now you just have streams of traffic waiting at red lights when nothing is anywhere near the green lights.

What annoys me is when you have a set on such a small cycle for one direction that your lucky if 5 cars get through. Then you have some numpty who takes ages to move off on green so that 5 cars becomes 1 or 2.

I believe the idea behind all this is to slow traffic up sufficiently to make you think twice about going out in your motor in the first place

- as opposed to investing in a season ticket / else
