Money paid into Bank account from unknown source ??
My wife has power of attorney for her old Mum's bank accounts etc. She saw today that £500 had been paid in by 'CHAPS INTL' transfer. I know that this is a money transfer system but m-in-l is 90 and has never even been abroard, has no overseas investments and it is a total mystery. We contacted the bank and they said that as it was such a recent transfer they had no details, call again in 24 hrs. I assume that they will be able to contact the sender and/or bank to get details and see to a return ?
Just really curious about it.

It's unusual to as CHAPS is the same day payment system that you can use if you really want to get the money to someone in a hurry, e.g. into a solicitors account for a house purchase. Most banks charge £25 a go for using this. A BACS payment (3-5 working days) is generally free.

I had that once for £50k! Quickly paid off part of the mortgage with it. 3 months later coughed it back up to the accident prone VAT man. Still it saved few hundred quid in mortgage interest at the time

All solved, no mystery at all really. All to do with the remains of late husbands pension coming from the pension administrator but why the sender couldn't indicate this ????? would have saved the head scratching or even the bank, just seems unbelievable it takes 24hrs before they know where something comes from !!
