I used to do a similar thing with roof tiles back in the sixties. I wore a padded cap and carried at a guess, forty pounds in weight of roof tiles on my head up a ladder, two rungs at a time, to the scaffold, balancing the load on my head, then step up on a couple of breeze blocks onto the roof which was felt and battened, walk up the battens and deposit the tiles ready for laying. I did use one hand to steady the load when walking up the battens though.

The last few few did seem a bit dodgy - why on earth wouldnt you moor alongaside !
It does conjure up the image of the guys who hold one arm up , for life, as some sort of religious endearment
