PS3 3D - whats that mean then?
Hi All
got a slimline ps3, not been on it much & the other night had an update for the 3D playability.
Now couple of things are confusing me......
Is it for games only or will it play blu-ray 3D?
Also i only have a panasonic 42" plasma - obviously not 3D, so would any 3D game blu-ray work if i bought some of them glasses?
Or am i wasting my time & need a 3D tv!?
Cheers

i think your wrong there mate.
we have some 3d films which we bought. good cartoon ones. ie pixar films. and we got the glasses on. and watched on our non 3d tv. 52" samsung and it was great. maybe better on a 3d tv. but it does work on a normal one.

that was played on a blue ray player. tried my ps3 last night and it was good but only done it to try it out as it updated so i thought i would give it a go
the glasses vary for different films iirc. red & green, red & Blue, Green & orange. it all depends on the film and colour seperation.

cheers Mr D, so it does play 3d blu-rays an not just games. How do i find out about the glasses?
I am getting Gran Turismo 5 & it can be 3D enabled so i am hoping that i can buy glasses that suit to play in some sort of 3d attempt from my normal plasma?

The 3d DVD with the green and blue glasses will work on any DVD player.

It has to do with how the different 3d formats work. The universal 3d format is anaglyph which uses those red and blue glasses. A 3d movie has two images of everything. One for the right eye and one for the left. In anaglyph all the left eye images are one color and all the right the other color which are red and blue as well. Then the red lens blends in with the red images and only the blue can get throw. Same with the blue lens, you can only see the red images. Since this 3d format uses color all color displays can use it.
Now with other 3d formats (new ones unless anaglyph type) you have a problem. Polarized 3d that they use in the theater has one polarized light wave for the left eye images and a different polarized light wave for all right eye images. Then the lenses block one light wave but not the other, so each eye only gets one image. In theaters they may have just one projector but it has two lenses with one projecting the left eye and one the right eye images at the same time. Then you have to have a special screen that can reflect the light back with the same polarization. Televisions can't do two different light waves, just not made to do it. There are televisions that can but they have to be made to do it.
The other 3d format is field sequential which uses shutter glasses that open and close. The one lens opens will the other one closes and they do this back and forth. When a lens opens the image for that eye will flash on screen. If the refresh rate of the television is under 100 hz (refreshing 100 time per second) then you will notice a flickering effect. Old plasma lcd television are 60 hz, rather slow. The flickering is bad. Now they can make them higher than that like 120 hz, even 600 hz. You just need a tv that can flash the images for each eye alternately at a fast enough rate and sync that up with the lenses.
See it is not as simple as just plopping a 3d dvd in any old dvd player on any old television and watching it

ok i see the intention of your statement, but at the end of the day im hardley incorrect in what im saying just different formats. so op will have to check which type of 3d is being purchased.

I understood what you was saying but you was giving the wrong answer to the op's original question.
A customer brought a 42" samsung 3D ready tv for £800 ,but IMO I wouldn't bother it'll only benefit with 3D projectors and 60" tv like I said just my opinion

all i want to know/understand is will my ps3 play these 3d blu-rays on my panny NON 3d plasma if i buy some certain 3d glasses to watch it through.
If yes what glasses do i need, if no - then i cant, simples ( to me anyhow.)
I cant be the only person with a ps3 '3D' enabled wondering if somehow it will work on a normal TV to some degree?

I must admit, I did wonder how to get it working myself. I downloaded the free 3D updates to 2 of my games, and I cannot see for love nor money how to get to show in 3D!
Not got a 3D TV, just wanted to see what it looked like.
