Driving with a mobile
Look North tonight said "you are 4 times more likely to have an accident if you are on the phone (handsfree)...it isnt the holding of the phone thats so much the problem, its the distraction of conversing with someone else."
So whats the difference between that and having your wife sitting next to you, where theres no cancel button?

I find on the hands-free that my driving interrupts the phone call, so the opposite of what the *survey* is trying to say ....

Personally, when i'm in the car my phone is turned to silent. Once i stop driving I check my phone and make any calls that seem necessary. I'm not interested in handsfree or anything else as I'm not really that important to worry about missing a call or two.

When on the phone most people "visualise" what the other person is saying, instead of concentrating on actually driving.
Hence why they crash.
I get countless people at work, smacking alloys off the entrance to the wash track, because they are not concentrating on which direction we are pointing towards.

With regards the OP, I find a telephone conversation more involved than a conversation with someone in the same place as me. Maybe as StickyMicky says, I'm visualising the other person with the tone of their voice compensating for the lack of body language and so my brian is working overtime to fill in the gaps of the picture rather than concentrating on the road.
I don't use my phone when driving and more often than not switch it off before I leave simply because it's illegal and takes up too much of my concentration.
