Could be a waste of time, but I'll ask anyway
I was wondering if anyone knew if it would be ok to paint tiles with anything other than tile paint, and if so, what would be best?
I know it seems like a silly question but I'm working on a really tight budget and tile paint is quite expensive (depending on how much I'd need). Plus a while back, we did the kitchen with it, cleaned the tiles thoroughly etc. followed the instructions and it has still peeled off in places. So if there was something cheaper that would cover, I'd rather save a few quid and go with it, it's no great loss if it peels some time down the line, considering the specialist paint has.
If it helps, this is only for a separate toilet, so it doesn't have to withstand steam/grease etc.
I know in the grand scheme of things tile paint may seem cheap, but I'm really trying to keep costs down as much as I can.
Any advice appreciated, so long as it's not negative.

Never tried it Lisa but it seems to me that as Swiss says, the tile paint will do the job very well but using ordinary paint might be a mistake that you will regret later. It would cost you more in the long run.

^^^^^^^^^^^Sorry but this makes no sense to me what does it mean?
Hi Lisa
I assume you are are painting normal flat shiney tiles. If so then tile paint is the answer. Nothing else will stick very long to the tiles, nor stand the cleaning for long either.
have a look at the likes of wickes and TP for bargains - end of line tiles you might be surprised how cheap they can be got if you are looking for a change of colour and not fancy stuff.
the time spent prepping tiles for painting then painting would be better invested in retiling painted tiles will always look like they have been painted (funnily enough).
Good luck

I'm not too concerned about being able to tell it's painted as it's only to freshen up a small toilet room.
Thanks for the advice everyone (apart from Eileenen, no idea wtf that was about ). Had a feeling I wouldn't be lucky enough to get away with something else.

Lisa, You used to be able to get a paint on undercoat for tiles called USP. It was clear liquid that once dry could be overpainted with any gloss paint. I did a bathroom once about 10 years ago and it lasted quite well.
The product circled.
