Default BT Infinity

Noticed I can get this now, has anyone already got it, am on Sky BB, with Tv and phone (still BT line) so am interested in what needs to change, mainly in terms of cabling, obviously we have a dish so how is the BT TV delivered and do I need to put additional data cables in ?

Oh, and is it any good ?

This unfortunately isn't available at my exchange, but my understanding is that it is finally BT rolling out fibre to the local greenbox and that the actual cabling to your house stays unchanged.

There is also fibre-to-home but I believe that is for new build houses only.

Not available in our area until 1/12/10.

Bt vision is currently streamed via your existing BT line, although HD films have to be downloaded overnight due to bandwidth.
Perhaps infinity will allow immediate streaming of HD films?
Otherwise, BTV is simply a freeview recorder box, so you need a TV aerial.
Would be nice if a future box was an HD freeview/sat combo recorder.

You got me excited enough to go and look again (sad I know, but I was one of the first people to start all the ADSL campaign rubbish http://www.theregister.co.uk/2002/05...d_dsl_protest/ so broadband stuff interests me).

So it is fibre to cabinet so everything in your house stays the same. Have read here: http://www.zen.co.uk/business/broadb...band-faqs.aspx

And my exchange will be upgraded in March 2011

So basically it's the same thing Virgin have offered for several years, but slower.

Admittedly it has faster upload but Virgin state they will roll out 100mbps by the end of the year and I'm sure the upload would increase along with it.

Personally 50mb is fast enough for me, I don't care about the broadband race anymore. Downloading a film in under 5 mins is quick enough for me, couldn't care less if it's 2.5 mins or 5 really. Takes longer to unpack on some machines than it does to download lol.

Yes and No. Yes in that it can be significantly faster than standard ADSL and the basic tech is RF over copper cables, but Virgin use DOCIS 3.0 over copper coax cables and BT Infinity uses VDSL 2 over (mostly) 0.5mm copper twisted pair.

How very dull am I ?

Well, got back from sunny Birmingham and got it ordered, due on the 5th of Oct, Sky didnt even ask why I was leaving which seemed strange, just asked for the code, they gave it without any attempt to retain my custom !

BT website predicts 25 mb versus the 3.5 I am getting now, even if thats to be taken with a pinch of salt it should be a lot faster.

Well, got it installed yesterday and a quick Speedtest indicated it was running at 33 Megabits/sec down (10* faster) and 1.5 up, significantly quicker, browsing is instantaeneous, apart from Scoobynet which as usual is pretty slow !

So far, pretty happy !
